http://americasvoiceonline.org/blog/entry/mark_krikorian_wants_to_strip_puerto_ricans_of_citizenship/#When:19:24:46ZIt’s like he can’t help it: ridiculously anti-immigrant "pundit" Mark Krikorian, executive director of the hate group/think tank Center for Immigrant Studies (CIS), has penned another racist, nativist gem, making him once again one of those people we’re kind of glad to have around.
Here’s the (Krikorian's) post in its entirety:
I’m at a hearing of the immigration subcommittee, and
the pseudo-congressman from Puerto Rico is going on about how “we” are a nation of immigrants. “We”? Puerto Rico is a foreign country that became a colony of the United States in 1898, no different from the French colony of Togo or the British colony of Uganda (or the U.S. colony of the Philippines). Congress granted residents of the island U.S. citizenship during World War I, but
Puerto Ricans remain a distinct people, a distinct nation, with their own (foreign) language, their own history, their own culture. Like other remnants of late-colonialism (like Belize, Djibouti, Comoros, etc.), most Puerto Ricans don’t want independence at this point, because it would end the gravy train. But that’s not our problem — we need to end this unnatural situation and give the nation of Puerto Rico an independent state as soon as practicable.
This is the same Krikorian, by the way, who famously suggested that we should
Anglicize Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s name, wrote that Haiti’s problems stemmed from not having been
colonized long enough, and blamed immigrants and Hispanics for voter fraud, global warming, the health care crisis, and the demise of Wall Street. We at America’s Voice wonder how Krikorian finds the time to be an expert linguist, historian, meteorologist, and economist while directing CIS and palling around with founder and white nationalist John Tanton.
Slightly less laughable is the fact that Congress and many major news outlets continue to treat Krikorian as an “expert” on immigration, referencing his testimonies and citing his ideas -- while ignoring his ties to the
notorious and extremist Tanton network. “
Attrition through enforcement,” an immigration policy more accurately known as “mass deportation,” is a concept originally articulated by Krikorian and currently pursued by anti-immigrant hardliners Reps. Lamar Smith (R-TX), Elton Gallegly (R-CA) and Steve King (R-IA).
I always thought the goal of rw wackos like Kirkorian was to protect "us" (real Americans :patriot: ) from "them" (foreigners :scared: ). Apparently being an American citizen is not enough to make someone an "us" if that someone is from Puerto Rico. They are still a "them" that needs to be excluded in spite of their citizenship.
Kind of clarifies where you're coming from, Mark. Thanks. :)
