Steve King's Anti-Promiscuity Crusade
By Pema Levy | Posted 03/02/2011 at 03:00 PM

Last night, while Congress debated funding the health-care bill, Rep. Steve King couldn’t help also mentioning why he voted to defund Planned Parenthood: “Planned Parenthood is invested in promiscuity.”

King really let the cat out of the bag here. This year, the right has launched an attack on Planned Parenthood by arguing that any money that goes to Planned Parenthood or similar organizations is going toward abortions, even though federal law prohibits that. They have tried other strategies too, like using a series of “sting” videos to claim that Planned Parenthood supports sex-trafficking (a charge so bogus that the FBI recently declined to pursue it). They have also cut government funded family-planning services in their new budget, allowing their outrage over abortion to spill over into a general anti-women’s health-care stance.

By framing everything as anti-abortion, the right remedies the contradictory stance of being both against abortion and against abortion-reducing measures like contraception. But King’s explanation makes a lot more sense. A few weeks ago, Will Saletan took Republicans to task for denying any interest in “social engineering” while doing everything in their power to limit reproductive care in private as well as public insurance plans. They obviously want to control women’s behavior by denying them care. It’s disturbing to hear King confirm his desire to confine women’s activities and punish sexuality -- as Media Matters put it, "The reason King gave last night for defunding Planned Parenthood was straight out of a 1950s sex ed class" -- but at least he's being honest.

1. Yes, because all married people want to have 15 kids
so once people are married they stop using birth control.

(Everyone knows that this is a push by the RADICAL Christian right to abolish all birth control, right?)

4. Yup that's exactly what it is - and I have the feeling they are going to freaking succeed. I hate
living in this damn country sometimes. I hate the direction this country is heading. I hate the stupid religious fundies who are simply insane.

9. I figure in about 20 years
We will end up living in a Theocracy.. the way things are going. The stupid are taking over this country, and many of them feel the only book needed in the library will be the bible. Then again, revolution might be one hell of a ride..

2. Yeah because we know how well R morals are so much better why there has never been
one R that ever had sex with anyone outside of his 4th wife. Oh and page boys and bathroom trysts with other men isn't really sex it is just research.

8. When my HUSBAND lost his job and was work of work,
I went to PP to get my BC and they gave me them for FREE. We had two young children at the time and DIDN'T want another to feed. We felt it was OUR responsiblity to not bring any more children into this world which we couldn't afford to provide for. I suppose they expected us to stop having intercoured for over a year? Or maybe trust in GOD to provide? No, no, on both counts.

When he did get a job we donated to the local food pantry AND PP, NOT let's have another KID.

I wrote this with the letter I signed from PP to our reprsentatives.

12. If contraception is available, people know how to use it, then they will have sex
that is their reasoning. People will have less sex if they don't have contraception because they know they might get pregnant. If they have contraception, then they will be promiscuous. Have random sex with whomever because there is no worries about pregnancy. Right?

They say this straight faced and mean it. Incredible.

18. Because sex is special and sharing bodily fluids should only happen between special people
who care specially for each other in a special way. Unlike us who just like to feel good and feel close with someone. Or else because they are embarrassed and don't want to admit they feel those sorts of things. Sex is icky? (it is sticky but can be fun).

17. Got pill @ college med center way back.
I grew up knowing I had to beware who I had sex with because if I got pregnant I'd end up with them. However, instead of then translating that to "only have sex with people who are good for you" it often ended up "have sex with people and get too emotionally attached to the asshole". If that makes sense.

I've been working against the "having contraception available will give permission to have sex" with high schools for most of my adult life. Because you know what? They will have sex anyway and better to be informed and somewhat protected than not. And better to not have to then be stuck emotionally with an asshole simply because you jumped each other.

Oh, sorry, promiscuity there. Unlike my Great grandma who was pg when married. omg, did they have sex before marriage way back then? um, yes.

rant over

19. Oh yeah I agree. I have two daughters who are grown now..........
and they've been on the pill since they were 14 years old AND they've been told about sex at EVERY age appropriate question and answer from the time they were born. I remember the way I was and I remember it was exactly what you said, they're going to have sex anyway, so they might as well be prepared.

The attitude you described WAS the pre Pill attitude though. Although too young for sex, I remember the attitude.
