The 90-year-old actor told the Special Committee on Aging that he had been mistreated and financially abused by his stepson and the man’s wife. "If elder abuse can happen to me, it can happen to anyone," he said, urging the senators to act swiftly to help other victims.
Just last month the actor and World War II veteran, who has racked up more than 300 movie credits and an honorary Lifetime Achievement Oscar, was granted a restraining order against his
stepson and his stepson’s wife. According to court documents in the California case, Chris and Christina Aber took control of Rooney's finances and in effect kept him a prisoner in his own home.
"My money was stolen from me," Rooney told the Senate panel. "I was eventually stripped of the ability to make even the most basic decisions. ... My daily life became unbearable."
Rooney then had words for the estimated 2.1 million Americans believed to be victims of elder abuse or neglect: “You are not alone. ... You have nothing, nothing, to be ashamed of."
