Check Please! World's 5 Most Expensive Foods
Check Please! World's 5 Most Expensive Foods

The economy is on the rebound and you need a bite to eat, why not blow a paycheck (or two) on a gold-flecked sandwich, an $800 bottle of beer or a truffled hot dog?

Luxury chefs and media mavens are always trying to one-up each other, which makes for entertaining news and mind-blowing Guinness records. Everybody else, however, is stuck wondering if these sumptuous snacks are really worth more than their pedestrian counterparts.

...

Most Expensive Food No. 5
Gold-Flecked Cheese Sandwich

If you've got 111 pounds ($180) to blow, and really, really like cheese -- Chef Martin Blunos' record-breaking cheese sandwich is for you.

Most Expensive Food No. 2
Antarctic Brew

The most expensive beer is a title that changes hands almost every year. But an $800 bottle of beer brewed from melted Antarctic glacial ice might hold the top spot for some time.

The Antarctic Nail Ale from Nail Brewing in Perth, England, beat out the previous most expensive beer -- bottled inside taxidermied squirrels -- by just $35.

1. Flecks of gold aren't food.
However, beer made from melted Antarctic glacial ice certain qualifies -- and deserves an enormous eyeroll. Care to measure the carbon footprint of that extravagance?
