Dior fires "odious" Galliano for racist slurs
Tue Mar 1, 2011

Dior - a favorite on the red carpet -- was all but invisible at Sunday's Academy Awards ceremony and Portman delivered a statement on Monday condemning Galliano.

Portman -- who won a best actress Oscar for ballet film "Black Swan" on Sunday, is Jewish and has a deal to promote the Miss Dior Cherie perfume -- said she was "deeply shocked and disgusted" by the video.

"In light of this video, and as an individual who is proud to be Jewish, I will not be associated with Mr Galliano in any way," Portman said.

1. I'll never understand folks on top of the world kicking it out from underneath themselves.
If I were hugely successful, I'd hold up in my private hideaway, sipping 18-year-old scotch while watching Bogie movies, and thinking about the things that could've been.

I certainly wouldn't be out in public making an ass of myself.

4. I've heard similar garbage coming from the mouth of a drunk rich guy of JG's orientation
Edited on Tue Mar-01-11 04:53 PM by Mimosa
I was acquainted with somebody high up in show biz. And one night, years ago, when he was just as drunk as Galliano, and I was dining with him and 2 friends at a restaurant I was subjected to a similar slurry tirade, only the misogynist version.

I wasn't amused. I didn't bait him. I turned my chair completely around and enjoyed myself as if he didn't exist. My sober buds took care of the restaurant check, carried him to the car and then we dumped him at his hotel. I ignored him because by the time he had to be carried to his room, he couldn't even speak. Passed out.

Galliano has a serious alcohol problem. And people's weirdest demons emerge from intoxicated brains. I think it's crazy to treat an obnoxious drunk as if the garbage they spew is worth debate. And in the video I saw the people were egging the silly ass on.

I honestly don't think the person who aimed the hateful misogynist version of Galliano's pukefest at me meant what he said. At least not in the thinking portions of his brain. And trust me, what this recent Oscar presenter said to me was quite offensive. But I don't get the point of taking the demented words of an alcoholic seriously.

I do respect Ms. Portman's and Dior's choice to repudiate Galliano's words. But to prosecute a slurring, ridiculous alcoholic for the gibberish they say is a waste of resources. They aren't genuinely 'thinking'. They are in a strange world of emoting. Somebody like Galliano wasn't born when Hitler was alive, is probably badly educated and was trying to be offensive. Who's he to criticise anybody's noses or fashion sense? Google images of Galliano and you'll see what I mean. This isn't David Duke. It's a pathetic alcoholic who was probably on his way to being fired.

6. The guy was drunk off his ASS
Not that that excuses his antisemitism but his much bigger problem is obviously his inability to drink alcohol and keep his sanity.
On a related note, has anyone ever seen somebody smoke weed and then have this Evil Twin side come in and take over?

7. man, talk about destroying your career
Galliano is perhaps the most famous fashion designer in the world. I don't see his career surviving this and I don't think it should.

8. goes with the territory?

I don't support his drunken tirade and hateful anti-semitic remarks, but I do think that high fashion is often about pushing the envelope, shocking tradition in to new creativity, and challenging the status quo, overall being the bad boy, the enfant terrible. Galliano certainly belongs to that group. When you spend so much time in that environment, make belief and reality may become a bit blurred...especially when you're drunk. Anyone who has to live up to an image of constantly being on the cutting edge, promoting their personal vision season in season out....is bound to say the wrong thing once in a while. And I'm sure many in the fashion industry may have done so in the past.

It's just that this one got caught, this time.

That said, I find it interesting that Ms. Portman says she is proud of her ancestry, but changed her name to Portman from Hershclag.
