Pro-union letter I had published last month in our city's paper
Eugene Foley's Dec. 27 letter lambasting unions ("Unrealistic Unions") really got my blood boiling.
Mr. Foley thinks that unions should adjust their demands (read lower demands and wages) to match the world economy. Perhaps the thinking should be that in a world economy, wages in developing countries should be developed to meet, as nearly they can, the wages in developed countries.

I truly believe that those working in America, union and nonunion, do not want their wages and benefits to match those of developing countries. I believe that those working in developing countries would want very much to have at least half of what we workers have achieved in the United States.

Unions have existed to protect the financial aspect of the work force and have been the impetus behind safety and security for workers. There is a need now, more than ever, for the protection of workers by unions, both here and abroad. Mr. Foley may not want to face the fact, but unions even exist in developing countries, where they fight daily for workers.

Mr. Foley may not want to understand the following, but it is true. Does Mr. Foley have two days off a week, does he get paid time and a half over 40 hours, does he have vacation time, sick time, a retirement plan and holidays off? If so, he can thank the unions. If not, he should think about joining one.
