Comedy star Kenneth Mars bows out

Comic actor Kenneth Mars - who starred in two Mel Brooks classics - has died aged 75.

Mars played a Hitler-worshipping playwright in The Producers and a police inspector with a rogue false arm in Young Frankenstein.

He died of pancreatic cancer on Saturday at his home in Grenada Hills, California.

In Brooks's 1968 romp The Producers, Mars co-starred as Franz Liebkind, a Nazi enthusiast whose play, Springtime For Hitler, is the basis for a scheme by two conniving showmen to fleece investors by putting on a surefire Broadway flop.

Farce Brooks cast Mars again in 1974's Young Frankenstein as the earnest policeman poking around the castle grounds on the trail of a mad scientist's monster.

In both films, Chicagoborn Mars demonstrated his talent for vocal farce, lending over-the-top German accents to the characters.

Mars's nearly 50-year career included a long list of voice credits, including The Little Mermaid, The Jetsons and The Land Before Time. He is survived by two daughters.

There is a scene in "The Producers" (1968) Zero Mostel, and his crew are sitting in the audience, and Mars comes on as this crazy writer and does a very odd Hitler imitation, and Zero says..."That is our Hitler"... for his play, that he hoped would fail.

Well that scene with Mars is one of the funniest scenes I have ever seen. Well worth watching..

Also, Ken did a lot of voice over work, and was in many many TV shows and films...here is a link at IMBD

Not that it isn't a loss worthy of note, just that it didn't happen today.

3. I think you're referring to Dick Shawn as the actor playing Hitler as a hippie flower child.
Mars was the playwright who was always wearing the German army helmet.

5. "A Riot Is An Ugly Thing -- and I Think It Is Just About Time That We Had One!"
One of the great lines from "Young Frankenstein" -- applicable to the whole 21st century.

And uttered by him!
