Portland Hospital's statement on yesterday's "Parking Lot" incident
Yesterday, I posted a news article about the 7th Day Adventist Hospital in Portland seemingly relegating a man to calling 911 in their own parking lot, while declining to treat him in their emergency room.

The article -- of the many I've posted on DU over the years! -- drew an astonishing number of recs and responses, for what seemed like a kind of "routine" news story about the continued fraying of whatever social/safety web the elites had previously permitted us.

It seemed to have struck a nerve.

Today, however, a DUer sent me a link with the Hospital's side of a story they say was in no way reflective of their policy. so in the spirit of fairness, and in a "Rashomon"-like frame of mine, here it is (well, a chunk of it!):

Statement From Adventist Medical Center

Hospital representatives respond to claims from Portland police that they wouldn't step outside to help a man who crashed his car outside the hospital.

1. Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and friends who lost a loved one today.

2. We do NOT have a policy against responding to emergencies in our parking lot. In fact, we always call 911 and send our own staff into these situations whether they are gun shot wounds, heart attacks, or any other medical emergency. We have done so many times in the past year alone.
3. In this specific situation, we would like to clarify the facts:

--A Portland Police Officer informed us of a car accident in our garage that we believe occurred at least 20 minutes prior. We advised the officer immediately call 911 because EMS have the mobile equipment to respond to a car accident.

--Before the officer left our Emergency Department, our charge nurse directed a paramedic to go immediately to the scene. She also dispatched our first responders, who are trained security staff, to go outside to the scene of the accident. When the security staff arrived, the police were already doing CPR.

1. It's a good idea
to try to make sure you have all the facts before passing judgement on a situation.

I do like the "Rashomon" reference.

3. It wasn't a matter of having all the facts -- it was a posted news story, and this was a statement
...that came the next day.

So the story continues to unfold. Hence the follow up!

And I'm suddenly in to see "Rashomon!" ;-)

2. I hope that they did respond appropriately.
my daughter did her residency at a 7th day Adventist hospital and they seemed like a very caring organization.

4. Can you at least post this in LBN to give the same exposure to this report?
