US Embassy Cairo Local Employee Picked-up by Egyptian Security Forces Now Confirmed Dead

FSN Khairy Ramadan Aly was allegedly picked up by Egyptian security forces from his home and has now been confirmed dead.

Secretary Clinton's statement on the Loss of Locally Employed Staff Member Khairy Ramadan Aly in Cairo | February 10, 2011:
On behalf of all the men and women of the State Department and USAID, I offer our condolences to the friends and loved ones of Khairy Ramadan Aly, a member of our Embassy family in Cairo who went missing from his home on January 28 and has now been confirmed dead. Mr. Aly was a carpenter in the Embassy’s Facilities Office with 18 years of dedicated service. We join his family, friends and colleagues in Egypt in mourning this loss. Throughout this period, many Egyptian employees of the U.S. Mission have continued to work alongside their American colleagues in Cairo and Alexandria. The United States is grateful for their contributions, commitment and sacrifice during this difficult time.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the many Egyptians who have lost their lives or loved ones, been injured, or had their homes and property destroyed in recent days. As we have said repeatedly, the United States condemns violence against civilians under any circumstances. Abuses committed against those seeking to exercise basic freedoms must stop. There is a clear responsibility by the Egyptian government, including the armed forces, to protect those threatened and to hold accountable those responsible for using violence and intimidation that threatens the aspirations of the Egyptian people. We look to the Egyptian government to demonstrate to its people that it is serious about moving quickly toward genuine change.

Our thoughts and prayers for his bereaved family and the US Embassy Cairo community.

Zakaria: Mubarak 'baiting' protesters
February 10th, 2011
05:30 PM ET

Egypt's Hosni Mubarak stubbornly clung to the presidency on Thursday, refusing in a highly anticipated speech to step down by saying he does not take orders from anyone outside Egypt. CNN's Fareed Zakaria says this move by Mubarak may be just trying to bait the protestors into more violence.

Watch more about what this might mean and read an edited transcript from Zakaria:

Video

"One hopes that history does not mark this as the moment that this revolution turned. For two weeks the demonstrators have been peaceful, they have been entirely democratic and incredibly honorable. But they've been broken up, they have been beaten; the regime has tried to divide the opposition, it has tried to make phony concessions. The one thing the regime did not do is concede to the principle demand.

The danger here is that things will get radicalized. ... The opposition, the protesters, the crowds are going to get angrier and angrier. They're going to draw perhaps more violent people. That is, in a sense, what the regime is hoping for. In a strange sense, I think the Mubarak regime is trying to bait the crowd in Tahrir Square and is hoping for violence and is hoping for some kind of march on the presidential palace that seems to get violent. Then they can step in and in the guise of restoring order, return to the military rule, return to the martial law that they want to consolidate. That's the danger here.

This might be a turn that history will record as the moment things went awry."

After Vice President Omar Suleiman's speech, Zakaria said the move discredited Suleiman as any kind of transitional figure:
"Egypt is a very nationalist country with a very proud people. It has a 7,000-year-old history, as President Mubarak pointed out . But I don't think it's going to work. What you just witnessed is Omar Suleiman discrediting himself as any kind of transitional figure. Omar Suleiman, the vice president, could have been the man who ushered in a new Egypt. He wouldn't have lasted but he would have been the man who brokered it all. But he has decided to stick with his boss. ... Suleiman is a former general, former head of military intelligence and President Mubarak's consigliere. ... The regime is hoping that it can wait out these protestors. But I think the big mistake for the last two weeks that the regime has made is that it has kept assuming that these people are going to go home. And they don't go home - the crowds just keep getting bigger and bigger and stronger and stronger. Friday will be a very crucial day because my guess is that you'll see the largest protest you've ever seen in Egypt."

Obama: US backs orderly transition in Egypt
AP
Thu, 10/02/2011 - 21:13

Washington--Amid reports that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was about to step down, President Barack Obama said Thursday the United States stands ready "to support an orderly and genuine transition to democracy" in the Middle Eastern nation.

"What is absolutely clear is we are witnessing history unfold," Obama told students at Northern Michigan University. "It's a moment of transformation," he said.

Earlier, CIA Director Leon Panetta told a congressional panel that US intelligence indicated a "strong likelihood" that Mubarak was on his way out and might announce it as early as Thursday night. Egyptian TV said the embattled president would speak to the nation from his palace in Cairo.

"We are following today's events in Egypt very closely," Obama said, adding that he would "have more to say as this plays out."

Mubarak vows to stay in office until September elections

AP
Thu, 10/02/2011 - 23:57

Hundreds of thousands of Egyptian protesters endured a disheartening anticlimax Thursday night as President Hosni Mubarak dashed hopes of an early resignation by vowing to stay in office until September's presidential elections.

Mubarak said in a national television address that he would delegate some powers to Vice President Omar Suleiman that he would ignore "diktats from abroad,” and would “carry on and protect the constitution and the people and transfer power to whomever is elected next September in free and transparent elections.” The embattled president reiterated that he would not run as a candidate.

At this stage it is still unclear as to the role the army and Suleiman will play because Mubarak's comments were so ambiguous.

According to article 82 of the Egyptian Constitution, the President could “delegate his powers to a vice president” if “on account of any temporary obstacle the President of the Republic is unable to carry out his functions.

Anti-government protesters in Cairo's Tahrir Square react to Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's televised speech on Thursday.

CAIRO — Anger and disappointment seized protesters in Cairo Thursday as they realized that President Hosni Mubarak had no intention of stepping down and leaving the country, as they have demanded during more than two weeks of protests.

Even before Mubarak finished addressing the nation in a televised speech, chants of "down with Mubarak" and "leave, leave," erupted in Tahrir Square.

Mubarak called the demands of the protesters "just and legitimate" and promised to lead the country out of the current crisis. He said he was transferring some of his presidential powers to his vice president, Omar Suleiman, but did not elaborate.

Many watched in stunned silence to his speech, slapping their hands to their foreheads in anger and shock, some crying or waving their shoes in the air in a sign of contempt.
