Will Obama Ask Kaine to Save Virginia Senate Seat?
Kaine would be a natural choice for Democrats. He left office relatively popular after the single, four-year term that the Virginia constitution allows. His national profile and connections to Obama would help him raise money. And he has proven his ability to win votes in the growing exurban communities that are increasingly the key to winning in the swing state.
Not that Mr. Kaine would be a slam dunk. He made his missteps as governor and was frustrated by aggressive Republicans in the state legislature. And as Mr. Obama’s cheerleader for the last two years, his Republican opponents will have myriad partisan statements from which to pick as they assemble their attack ads.
But people who have spoken directly with Mr. Kaine over the last several months say he clearly dreads the call he might get from Mr. Obama asking him to run.
The former governor has told his friends and confidantes that he does not want to run for the Senate. He enjoys being the chairman of the Democratic party more than he expected to. And being in the Senate may not hold much appeal for Mr. Kaine — a former mayor and governor — who prides himself on being an effective executive.
Mr. Kaine’s wife, Anne Holton, a former judge (and daughter of another former Virginia governor) appears to have little interest in having Kaine run either, according to friends.
In an interview last September, Mr. Kaine told The Caucus, “I don’t see my name again on a bumper sticker.”
“I’m doing everything I can to persuade Jim to run again,” Mr. Kaine said of Mr. Webb at the time. “I think there are higher and better uses for me, and that’s helping others.”
And yet, Mr. Kaine has made it clear repeatedly that he serves at the pleasure of the president. Asked before the midterm elections about whether he wanted to remain at the helm of the D.N.C., Mr. Kaine often responded that he would do whatever Mr. Obama wanted him to.
