US Holds patent on medical cannabis (Hypocrite content)

On the one hand, United States federal government officials have consistently denied that marijuana has any medical benefits. On the other, the government actually holds patents for the medical use of the plant.
Just check out US Patent 6630507 titled "Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants" which is assigned to The United States of America, as represented by the Department of Health and Human Services.
The patent claims that "Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties, unrelated to NMDA receptor antagonism. This new found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and HIV dementia."
The patent was obtained in October of 2003.
Cannabinoids, for those who were wondering, are a group of chemical compounds found in marijuana that are also referred to as terpenophenolic compounds. One specific cannabinoid compound found in cannabis is tetrahydrocannabinol, more commonly known as THC. This substance gives marijuana its psychoactive effects.

1. Hmmm
this would seem to establish that every federal marijuana-related prosecution since that date has been made in bad faith.

2. Gosh and I thought it was because the holder didn't have a tax stamp
Which is how the Fed has banned marijuana, possession requires a stamp that was never produced, nor was it ever intended to be produced.

3. This absolutely infuriates me.
The government knows that medical marijuana can relieve great suffering, possibly prevent some cancers and Alzheimer's, etc and it just doesn't give a good God damn. That's plain evil. And the question is why? Profit for big pharma, a need for authoritarian control? What's the point of keeping marijuana illegal?

What's the answer? Lawsuits from people who are suffering or from family members of those who are suffering?

5. I agree. And you answered your "why" question. Control and profit.
They do not care how many people it will help.

6. The principle is much bigger
than legalizing marijuana...it's all about a government that does what is best for the people and not corporations and those who want more power.

7. The FDA's statement on Cannabis....
Edited on Wed Feb-09-11 07:25 PM by Bennyboy
Last week, the Food and Drug Administration reported that it had definitively established that marijuana has no medical use or value. Definitively? Established? I don't think so.

The FDA's announcement begins by acknowledging the claim that smoked marijuana may be beneficial for some conditions. Then the agency points out that among drugs with a potential for abuse, marijuana is lumped in with the most dangerous drugs, the ones that have no potential medical benefits and the highest likelihood of misuse. The FDA next affirms that a collection of federal agencies have together concluded that marijuana is both dangerous and medically valueless, based on scientific studies in humans and animals. The announcement—actually, it's an "inter-agency advisory"—concludes by asserting, with a boldness that might belie a certain uneasiness, that it is the FDA's job to approve drugs. Take that, state legislatures and voters.

The FDA's statement implies that the agency reached its conclusion about marijuana after conducting a new serious analysis of the existing scientific literature on the drug. But of course no such analysis was reported in the medical literature and, in fact, no identifiable official at the FDA took responsibility for last week's advisory. It was just put out there as a statement of fact.
