Foreign cooking shows banned on Iran TV

BY AGENCE FRANCE PRESSE
Updated : 1 hours and 6 minutes ago

TEHRAN, Feb 6 - Iran's state-run television has been banned from screening cooking shows that promote foreign cuisine as conservatives seek to fight Western influence in the Iranian culture, media reported on Sunday.

"From now on teaching how to cook non-Iranian dishes is banned," deputy head of Iran's state broadcaster Ali Darabi was quoted as saying by Aftabnews, a moderate website, and several other media outlets.

Iran boasts a rich cuisine and cooking shows are very popular, with chefs teaching a variety of Iranian and foreign recipes on daytime television.

Italian, Chinese and Indian dishes are also favoured by many Iranians, while officials warn against the increasing consumption of unhealthy fast food.

8. Nothing like ignorance.
People eat spaghetti in Iran and have for some time.

I would imagine the concern is with food that is forbidden by religious law--pork, shellfish, etc.

9. uh, I think that poster was making a joke
and no, food forbidden by religious law doesn't seem to be the main concern according to the article.

11. It says right in the article the ban is to discourage "western
influence". It's got nothing to do with pork.

4. When they tell you what to eat, not even for health purposes...
but to control what you eat for heritage purposes, you need to change the government.

6. Well, BAM to the schmucks. Lasagna is terribly threatening, could produce such
acts of independent cooking like the merger of gnocchi with a Persian saffron sauce, would be
devastating to the country..lol

Seriously though, how sad is that..sheesh.
