With inclement weather used as an excuse, the U.S.’s unemployment rate dropped to only 9 percent in January, the second-straight monthly drop as the economy continues to underwhelm economists.

Of course the “unemployment” rate of a country does little to understand the actual employment situation of a nation. The official figure of unemployment does not take into account those who are working part-time, nor does it count those who have given up looking for work entirely. —JCL

US unemployment fell in January to 9% from 9.4% a month earlier, the Department of Labor said.

1. The U-3 doesn't include part time workers or discourage workers but U-4, U-5, and U-6 do.

So lets look at those numbers.



U-4 includes U-3 + discouraged workers
U-5 includes U-4 + all other marginally attached workers
U-6 includes U-5 + all economically driven part-time workers.

All have declined.
