Al Jazeera English is interviewing Slavoj Zizek!
or is it "?"

Holy hell. What have I been missing by not watching AJE? He brings together Hegel, Lacan, and Marx in always unexpected ways...so no way you'd see him on American TV.

5. "is there not a delicious irony here..."
that so few people were there when the Hussein statue came down, but in Egypt we see a million?

Zizek says Americans were hiring people to go to the symbolic removal of the Hussein statue, but in Egypt we have an authentic movement.

The American people, 40% of whom believe in angels and ghosts, are in no position to criticize the religious myths of another culture. (etc)

6. Zizek is brilliant!
Fundamentalism is a result of a void of the left. What is needed in
Islamic countries and America is a strong left.

Hear hear!

7. I was trying to transcribe that but failed
thank you for getting the essence of it.

And I agree. Whatever disagreements I have with him, he is undoubtedly brilliant.

11. K & R from a Zizek fan!
Never mind what he says. He adds life to philosophy and critical theory!

If you haven't seen the film already, be sure to watch the trailer for The Pervert's Guide to Cinema.

20. He was also in a film last year that featured
Judith Butler, Cornell West, Peter Singer, and some I don't remember, called An Examined Life. If you get a chance, check it out. West was kinda weak, but the film overall was quite good.

21. Yes. Saw that too. And I agree

... although I originally made a point to see it because it featured both Zizek and Brother West.

Also, somewhere on the InterTubes is a fascinating Zizek analysis of Children of Men

Love his unique interpretation The Sound of Music.

13. He's a philosopher from Slovenia
who emerged, in a way, in response to poststructuralism. He's a lover of Hegel and Marx and Lacan who has written a number of excellent books, the best of which (IMO) is The Sublime Object of Ideology. If you love film, you should definitely read his book on Hitchcock, Everything You've Always Wanted to Know About Lacan, but Were Afraid to Ask Hitchcock.

10. Those in power must find themselves in the position...
of the mouse in Tom and jerry cartoons: they go over the precipice but don't know they have gone over the edge. And then they look down, and they start falling. That is the position leaders must be in.

16. I am turned off by his references to Lacan, Lacan was a kook.
Edited on Fri Feb-04-11 12:07 AM by Odin2005
I tried to read his newest book "Living in the End Times", and the constant references to Lacan pissed me off, Psychoanalysis is BS!

He's a force to be reckoned with.
