Rove: What makes Egyptians better than yer usual Arab riffraff? Cleopatra, oh, and Ramses.

Despite the fact that Karl Rove says groups like the Muslim Brotherhood are a potentially "dangerous" force in any Egyptian elections, he still has "a certain amount of optimism about Egypt."

Rove explained to Sean Hannity last night that it's because the Egyptian people "view themselves not as simply followers of Mohammad, but these are the people who are descended from Ramses and Cleopatra. And as a result they've tended to be more western in their orientation, they've tended to be more secular."

It's not clear what Rove is referring to when he mentions Ramses, but he may be referencing Cleopatra's famous involvement with Julius Caesar and Marc Anthony, of the Roman Empire.

When I was in the Sinai...the Egyptians that we dealt with, did not like being called Arabs. They insisted that they were Egyptian, not Arab and were very adamant about it.

Things might have changed since then, but that's what I remember.

Arab or Muslim identity...Absolutely it does and you won't find an Egyptian that would argue otherwise. Having lived and worked in Egypt and elsewhere in the ME, I can attest to that.

But, I do not credit Rove with having that in mind. I strongly suspect he said it with intense sarcasm.

But what I think Mr. Rove may be referring to is that she was also the last Ptolemy to reign and at the time of her ascendancy, her bunch had pretty much depleted the whole of Alexandria.

Therefore she wasn't a brown Arab sort of person, but a white European. Since the Egyptians are (sort of) descended from the Greek Cleopatra, in KKKarl's eyes they must be better than "native" Arabs.
