This is the reverse, Christians protecting Muslims.

I think chances are, what you linked made this event possible though.

55. Select the second link ...
It tells you that

Muslims offered themselves as "human shields" on Friday to protect Coptic Christians celebrating their Christmas in Egypt just a week after a church bombing that killed 21 people.
...
Under the Coptic calendar, Christmas Day falls on Jan. 7.

"This from a couple of weeks ago ..."

This manner of speech usually indicates a contrarian, 'this was already posted, not late breaking news' response.
So, I misunderstood you.

88. I heard Paul McCartney sing "Imagine" at a concert last year.
Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

This is a beautiful and uplifting image. I'd like to believe it would be the same here, but have my doubts given the influence of media pundits.

96. I've been a part of something similar here.
It may not compare with directly facing down violence, but the Christian and Jewish communities came to the aid of the Muslim community when there was ugly opposition to a Mosque here in South Jersey.

You may have seen the documentary "Talking Through Walls":

17. I truly would love to see that pic as a defining moment of the movement.
Unfortunately, there are powerful forces of disunity at play here. There are factions in both Islam and Christianity (and other major religions for that matter) who would consider the lack of inter-religious violence and conflict is a worst case scenario.

I sometimes wonder about people's logic capabilities on here. They're not praying at that time, so they MUST be Christians. No way they could be atheists, or Buddhists, or Sikhs, or just non-religious, less religious, secular non-practicing, or perhaps even official Muslim people designated to protect their brethren at that troubling time.

No, they clearly could ONLY be CHRISTIANS.

lol

The question is how many Muslims are fully practicing, that is, must *all* Muslims pray every day at that time? Egypt is 90% Muslim, therefore the people doing the protecting are protecting from what exactly?

The Christians of Egypt are Coptic, Eastern Christians whose presence dates back centuries.

70. Tolerance is beautiful.
There is no reason to hate those who do not see things as you do.

I think that the youth of today all over the world are moving toward tolerance. I give a lot of credit to the internet and to international student exchange programs for this development.

It's something to give us all hope.

91. International travel = it's hard to hate people whom you've met

I think the most important thing I did for my kids as a parent was to encourage and assist them to study/travel abroad.
For myself, I found Istanbul to be particularly enlightening. I was there over a school/national holiday and was frequently around family groups or groups of school kids. Seeing three generations of Muslim women - grandmother covered all in black except for her eyes, moms in western dress, but with head scarves, and pre-teen daughters in Adidas, jeans and NO scarves or head coverings. A tired grandfather sitting on a park bench resting his feet and holding some shopping bags for the women of his family in one hand, and his prayer beads in the other. And a gaggle of teens getting off a school bus acted just like the American kids I've seen over the years.

One difference I did note: all the young people who were working in restaurants, hotels, shops, malls etc. were positive, pleasant and helpful - not a one off sulking in a corner with an Ipod & teenage angst. And they all spoke English. Wish American kids would become fluent in at least one other language.
"Don't tell me how educated you are, tell me how much you have traveled." — Mohammed

"To awaken alone in a strange town is one of the pleasantest sensations in the world." —Freya Stark

Hitler didn't travel. Stalin didn't travel. Saddam Hussein never traveled. They didn't want to have their orthodoxy challenged." — Howard Gardner

76. Wonderful tears looking at that beautiful photo and the one of Muslims protecting Christians.
I sent the two together to many people, including a couple of fundies I know.

It most certainly would happen here. The likes of people on DU would do it in a flash. We'd have to do it to protect them from the likes of people on FR.

92. Wonderful image to wake up to.
I am going to show this to my 7 yr old, when I stop crying. The Spirit of Kindness is not religion specific, and the sooner the masses around the world realize this, the sooner we can get on to building that better world for our children and grandchildren.

99. Beautiful pic.
I am a Christian...one that believes in the rights of all others to determine how and if they want to seek religious expression. Too many wars and battles fought over religion. This uprising in Egypt really has nothing to do with being a Muslim. It is about seeking freedom and the ability to control your own destiny with the freedom to vote. Anyone else trying to twist it otherwise is so, so wrong.

106. Humanity. It does not require a space daddy, but it is spiritual.
The thing that makes us a species of unqualified evolutionary success is our innate ability to show empathy and tolerance of each other in working towards a common goal. When the desire for change is so great that the people stop noticing the differences among themselves and begin working only for the commonalities of their goals, then the ruling elites are in trouble.

There's a reason that the Egyptian Revolution is not being called exactly that...the power elites of the existing world order (there's NOTHING "new" about it any more!) simply cannot stand those pictures and like vampires in the sunlight cannot abide the very existence of the sentiments that made them possible at all.

Viva Egypt.
Viva CHANGE that you can SEE!!!
