SOTU Impressions
Briefly:

{1} President Obama, who usually delivers a speech as well as any politician, had a down night. He reminded me of a president of a high school student council, saying that rainbows are pretty darned amazing, when you think about them ... and trying not to offend the faculty or administration.

{2} That fellow Ryan is a classic example a a frustrated, rigid, unhappy christian soldier, intent upon hoard his pennies and feces, and punish everyone who is outside his comfort zone.

{3} I think that Bachman is in the same zone as some annoying people in white garb I've encountered in airports, in an agressive, hypnotic stupor, demanding a contribution to the cause she/they believe is a divine doctrine.

Just my impression of an unimpressive show.

2. There was enough substance to keep me occupied but I agree on the down night. Obama can quite a room
...with his voice and choice of words.

This thing I've heard before already and still looking for results patiently

3. I can't recall any president offending many at a SOTU. Most are usually feel good
speeches.

5. I didn't watch it.
I was laughing at History channel PR instead. Anyone else see what they picked to play during the two hours of the speech?

9. Endtimes shows about the worst evil as interpreted from teachings of dispensationalism
and interpretations from some that comment on the book of Revelation.

7. Nice summation. My four farthings...

{1} President Obama spelled it out: Wall Street gets bailed out while We the People get to balance the budget via Trickle Down.

{2} Ryan reminded me of a child who says he really likes the way his finger smells after playing with his bottom.

{3} Bachman sounds better than she is.

11. I found Obama's speech paradoxical
{1} Government investing in America has made us a great country.

{2} We're not going to invest in America because we're in debt.

Edited on Wed Jan-26-11 03:53 PM by Catherina
I switched back a few times hoping it would get better but all I heard were corporations, USA 1, ROTC. I couldn't stomach it and got even angrier thinking I'd sent that man $4,600 I could ILL afford.

19. His delivery was way off.
Almost apologetic. But then again as much as I didn't want to admit it before the fact, I knew he wouldn't be a firebrand for the people.

21. Right.
Well said.

I knew that he wasn't going to grow a huge Afro, wear mirror shades, and ride into Washington on a motorcycle. But I invested my time, energy, and money on his campaign, because I anticipated him being a strong, rational advocate for Constitutional rule, and social justice.

When anyone says something such as this on DU, a few will react by saying, "Oh, you never supported him," or "You don't give him credit for the good he's done." Those descriptions do not fit me, however (or you). I like much of what President Obama has done. And I dislike some of what he's done, and an unhappy that there are things he's not doing.

Still, as Mark Rudd noted in the DU interview, the democratic left has to create a peace movement to create the ecessary atmosphere for President Obama to be an active advocate for that Constitutional rule and social justice.

22. We should form a PAC
And by we, I mean DU. Let me dream for a moment.

HumanPAC - We're not pack humans.

We could promote a humane era:

* Advocate non-military-interventionalist positions to include destroying the School of the Americas, both organizationally and physically at a demolition ceremony, televised.

* Split the CIA into 2 agencies who compete with each other to provide the best intelligence. 50% of their budget would be allocated by performance. They would also be responsible for keeping an eye on each other submitting daily briefs on their own and the other half's activity.

* I would prosecute any who tortured or approved torture, or failed to prosecute torture as accessories. If it truly was justified I would issue a pardon, but at this point in my life I really don't see that happening, except maybe for accessories.

* I would split the military into 2 halves, one with a solely humanitarian mission, the other combat ready. They would all receive martial training, and would be able to transfer between the commands. This would have a number of benefits by providing stress relief to the troops and help to convert the MIC to a more humane industry. I would declare a proselytizing amnesty in the military allowing anyone to resign immediately, and then drive the point home that behavior is unacceptable in this country's service.

* Structure the tax code such that it rewards those who are a positive influence on the US economy. Offshore jobs? Then you're in the highest bracket. Pay your employees above median? You get a break.

* Socialized medicine. Yes, I embrace the term and advocate a path that moves us there. There is no excuse for us to be in our present health tax paid directly to the upper crust.

That would be a good start.

Got a few million to get started?
