PRINCETON, N.J. The simple fact was that he had done something wrong, and at the end of a long and revolutionary career it didnt matter how often hed been right, how powerful he once was, or what it would mean for his legacy.

Dr. Robert L. Spitzer, considered by some to be the father of modern psychiatry, lay awake at 4 oclock on a recent morning knowing he had to do the one thing that comes least naturally to him.

He pushed himself up and staggered into the dark. His desk seemed impossibly far away; Dr. Spitzer, who turns 80 next week, suffers from Parkinsons disease and has trouble walking, sitting, even holding his head upright.

Now here he was at his computer, ready to recant a study he had done himself, a poorly conceived 2003 investigation that supported the use of so-called reparative therapy to cure homosexuality for people strongly motivated to change.

Wayne Besen, executive director of Truth Wins Out, a nonprofit group that fights antigay bias, in Burlington, Vt.

Get it now, or one of a million other designs!

1. It's heartening to see someone admit they were wrong about reasearch
they did and put out there that got so much attention.

Would that more would come forward even if it might hurt career in short admit you are wrong is a very hard thing...and particularly for an academic whose reputation and legacy could be so harmed.

Good for him ...doing what his conscience told him to do. Need more like him...

3. "Nymphomania" and homosexuality had similar histories with psychiatrists.

Homosexualtiy is not an illness, but at least the term "homosexuality" describes something that actually exists.

Nymphomania was a total fabrication.

I usually take the latest "scientific" study with many grains of salt.

Unless, of course, it confirms an opinion I already held. ;-)

As to Dr. Spitzer, mixed emotions.

Part of me wants to make the same comment as I made on the NAACP thread, namely About Damned Time.

However, part of this is that people did distort what he said. And another part of it is that he has done all he can to make up for the hurt to which he contributed for the past nine years.

And the selfish part of me says that I want forgiveness for my many mistakes when I try to make amends, so how dare I withhold it from someone else?
