Privatizing TSA

I missed this back in March. Now, I get why (ostensibly?) rank and file Republicans were so loud and persistent about TSA a while back.

New Law Clears the Way for Airports to Drop T.S.A. Screeners

Published: March 15, 2012

The law was welcome news to Larry Dale, president and chief executive of Orlando Sanford International Airport, who said his airports request to opt out of using Transportation Security Administration officers last year was denied by the federal government.

Mr. Dale said his desire to use private screeners in place of T.S.A. personnel was motivated by hundreds of complaints from passengers, and added that he had his own problems with the agencys screeners.

Weve visited a number of airports who have opted out of the T.S.A. screenings, and no one wants to go back, Mr. Dale said. We think this will be more efficient and customer-friendly for us.

Since 2001, a little-known law has let airports seek permission to stop using federal screeners. But airport officials said that the T.S.A had been slow in allowing the switch, and last year the agency said it would stop accepting additional requests.

Sixteen of the nations 450 airports use private contractors, including larger ones like San Francisco International Airport as well as smaller ones like Jackson Hole Airport in Wyoming.

I wonder if the above has anything to do with a more recent story about the TSA's underreporting breaches? /

1. Hoaxland Security's incompetence feeds into the privatization frenzy.
Oh, joy! ;-)

3. Hey! Homeland Security was out ahead of Occupy, a clear threat to national security.

Occupy was telling the truth about BOTH sides at the same time! That's practically a hanging offense.

ETA: I am so stealing Hoaxland Security. Just try to stop me.

2. Rep. John Mica (R-FL) is one of the ringleaders to privatize (profitize) the TSA.
Unfortunately, there is always a Florida connection.

The airport groping and irradiating *will* continue, only with less regulation, if that is possible.

It'll also fatten some private pockets along the way.

4. John Stossel was on The View, claiming that the private folks

do a better job for less money. He specifically cited San Fransisco.

If true, it will only be until they switch enough airports over to private. Then, the price will be hiked and probably added to the cost of the plane ticket.

Evenutually, Congress will have to subsidize. It will be like Fannie and Freddie. Taxpayers eating the losses while execs and private interests get rich.
