'60 Minutes' family receives new home
KISSIMMEE, Fla. -

A Central Florida family featured on 60 Minutes last week now has a new place to call home.

On the show, the Coates family told Scott Pelley about having to move their children into the family car and that they were even sleeping in a hospital parking lot so they would have a place to brush their teeth.

But a community effort helped the Coates move into a home on Lake Point Village Circle, near Ventura Elementary School and just east of State Road 436.

"I feel blessed, overwhelmed," said D'Angelo Coates.

Ashley Furniture, Target, Wal-Mart and people in Orlando provided for groceries, bedding and furniture for the 3 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom home.

2. This is great news
But what about all of the other people in the area suffering. I'm glad this family was featured on 60 Minutes, but wouldn't it be nice if we had more stories like this for multiple families.

3. ALL families deserve a good home.
Not just one featured on a primetime show that causes stores
to want publicity by "helping" someone.

7. It's good PR to help those in the spotlight ... bad for the bottom line to do it
out of the spotlight.

Same thing with the drug companies ... they provide "free" or "discounted" drugs for a handful ... for PR sakes. However, you probably have to jump through more hoops than what the Republicans claimed you'd have to do (to get the 2000 Gore refund) to qualify for the discounts.

4. Not to belitle the generosity of al the above,
but this most likely wouldn't have happened had the Occupy Movement NOT existed.

5. and television
I can pretty much guarantee there are another 50 families somewhere in Florida, living in their cars, who wish they were the subject of the piece. Unlike the family fortunate enough to have their plight broadcast to the nation, those other families will get squat from Ashley Furniture, Target, and Wal-Mart.

6. 60 Minutes should start doing a segment with the extra time,
now that Rooney has passed away, on a family in need and how the local community can help them. You could even have corps buy sponsorship time for it and how they helped the family with money or product donation. I realize it is cheap PR for big multi billion corporations, but at least a little good would come from it. It would also shed more light on how big a problem this is in the USA.

8. Great Christmas story.

Good to hear. Although the cynical side of me wants to think it was the Target
and Wal-mart employees who did the donating as opposed to the home offices.
