Cenk's Back
Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks and former MSNBC host, returns to TV tomorrow night, on Current TV. And he has invited me to be a guest on his first show.

Cenk virtually invented Internet TV news, and completely dominates that medium. Cenks Young Turks YouTube channel has almost 300,000 subscribers, enjoys 1,000,000 views a day, and has accrued over 600 million views since it started.

Cenk also was a substitute host on MSNBC last year, and he hosted the 6 pm hour on MSNBC from January through June this year. His show rated first among cable news shows with the audience aged 18-34.

His on-the-air signature is a quite simple one: like Rachel Maddow, Ed Schultz, Keith Olbermann and Dylan Ratigan, Cenk Uygur is a hard-hitting, unapologetic progressive. He tells it like it is. He doesnt say what you want to hear; he says what you need to hear.

Now, Cenk has decided to take his talents to Current TV. Hell be on weekdays, at 7 pm. Current TV is channel 358 on DirecTV, and channel 215 on the Dish Network. If you have cable TV, you can go to current.com and put in your zip code in the upper right corner, to find out which channel Current TV is for you.

Cenk has been kind enough to invite me on his show several times. One of the most memorable for me was our chat on the air just after the 2010 election, which was reported this way:

Grayson, visibly downbeat about his election results, explained that the reason for his defeat was the inability of Democrats nationally to get out the vote. If Democrats dont vote, he told Uygur, Democrats cant win. Explaining that turnout had fallen 20% for Republicans and 60% for Democrats in his district since 2008, he argued that Democrats are saddened and demoralized by this policy of appeasement that he believes always leads to defeat where compromise is not an option. Compromise, he continued, was not possible with Republicans because their entire strategy is no.
There is no center left, he continued to argue, such that being a centrist or attempting to ignore extremes was a losing policy. Calling the campaign a national disaster, Grayson believes his defeat was not a local issue, but a national epidemic of malaise on the left. Our voters went on strike, he concluded, and we have to win them back by accomplishing things for ordinary people.

If you want to see someone with a head, a heart and a spine report the news tomorrow night, then you can tune in to Cenks show. And if you want to help to see someone with a head, a heart, and a spine in Congress next year, then you can support our campaign.

Cenk, as Edward R. Murrow used to say on CBS, good night, and good luck.

Courage,

Alan Grayson

... since being homebound since June with daily nurse visits after two surgeries for pilonidal disease, I updated my DirecTV receiver and once again activated my $65/mo DirecTV subscription. I find myself checking Current a couple of times a day to watch Keith and now Cenk will be in my sights.

PS: If you OWN an early RCA DirecTV or similar unit/w access card and would like to update to an HD capable unit w/hdmi (Mitsubishi HD5 or similar), you can find used and refurbished circa 2004 units that are ready to just plug in, put your existing access card into, make your call to get a new activation hit (you don't have to tell them you are replacing your older unit, all that matters is your access card number) and you are good to go! Just make sure it is a non RID (registration ID, as these are LEASED, not owned) THERE ARE SCADS OF THEM ON eBAY, I found mine from a consignment shop(spencer, indiana) liquidating units from a former DirecTV contract repair business. Works great, like new in original box, 2 remotes-one is whole house RF, hdmi and composite cables, for $60! No need to get locked into a leased unit and 2 year contract.

By OWNING your receiver you do not have to pay any of lease costs and are free to do what you wish to with your equipment. The only cost that you will incur is $20 for a new access card if you do not already have one, as they do not let you transfer them over. As a result you can cancel your service anytime, or not renew a contract since you own the equipment.

86. Sorry if I've posted this enough already...
but I love current and what they've stood for over the last few years.

My favorite show... Vanguard... the investigative journalism that was produced in house, is no longer going to be produced after this season. I'm not sure why, but the team was just told they would be let go. I'll admit it makes me very skeptical about the direction of the company. They are saying they will produce some special programming from the vanguard team, but they wanted them off the payroll and that says a lot.

80. Unfortunately... Vanguard is paying the price
... I just heard that the team at Vanguard will be cut loose at the end of this year. Vanguard was the journalistic heart of Current TV and unfortunately they didn't see fit to keep them on. There is talk that Vanguard will be contracted to do a special or two a year, but we are definitely seeing a change in their commitment from investigative journalism, to armchair anchors.

81. Make no mistake...
Current is also Corporate journalism. As much as I love Cenk Uygur, it is likely that Cenk's show comes at the cost of the Vanguard team who have just been told to pack their bags. No more investigative team on the payrolls at Current. That was the real meat of Current TV for me.

Edited on Sun Dec-04-11 07:06 PM by sabrina 1
Our voters went on strike, he concluded, and we have to win them back by accomplishing things for ordinary people.

Some people tend to blame the voters when the Party fails them, THIS is a Democrat who doesn't shift the blame and is not afraid to tell the truth. A Democrat I could vote FOR with enthusiasm, rather than a 'lesser evil' choice. But he's not in my district :-(

Can't wait to see you on Current with Cenk tomorrow :loveya:

You, of course, are the best thing to hit Central Florida, where I loved in the days of "Walking Lawton"

We'll watch all right...

79. Read the fine print
Behind the scenes Current is letting go of some or all of it's Vanguard team and limiting production for Vanguard to maybe a special or two a year. Vanguard was far and away my favorite offering of Current's and now the real meat of Current journalism is about to disappear.

75. much as i love tyt i think this is a mistake
I see current crashing and burning, i dont know anyone who gets it and i just dont see it staying around long. hoping it doesnt take tyt with it if it does crash and burn.

I would have rather tyt stayed doing what it was doing. the current move sort of smells of 'sell out'. the studio sucks ass.

just not digging the move. hoping its not going to be a huge mistake but thinking it will be.

84. How about the fact that the Vanguard team was let go.
The guys at Current responsible for the real investigative work that I loved Current for... the stuff that won the Peabody award... they are being told to pack their bags. Not sure if that is related to the Cenk signing, but somewhere on the bottom line, I think they decided that they got more viewership by hiring armchair anchors than keeping a real investigative team on the payroll. That smacks of corporate garbage to me.

87. I love Vanguard. I don't really watch TV "news" shows. That was quality reporting though. I found
this article online. I had no idea until I read your post.

78. This is good news BUT Vanguard suffers this coming season
It will mean the scaling back of my favorite Current show... Vanguard. Unfortunately Vanguard will be limited to special only productions and I think the journalists may be getting cut from the payroll... I'm very sad about this.

Need to get back into congress and fight the good fight for the people!!! I loved listening to you, you pulled no punches, and I think more americans need that brutal honesty, instead of the BS pablum they are fed.
