Poll question: Have you had or will you be getting a flu shot this year?
(This is not a scientific poll.)

Would you care to say why or why not?

But I have 80/20 coverage and they'll overcharge you. I found it cheaper just to get it at CVS or Walgreens.

Much cheaper to pay for a flu shot than miss several days of pay.

16. I got one every year while I was working
They came to the office and gave them free as a way of preventing absenteeism during the winter months.

When I retired i got out of the habit. It seems if I had to get up off my ass to get a flu shot I wasn't motivated enough to do so.

I've been retired over ten years now and I've been fortunate enough to have avoided getting the flu at all.

Maybe all the pre retirement flu shots built up an immunity. My wife gets a shot every year and she has had the flu twice since I retired so it's not like I haven't been exposed.

although there are some old cases of octogenarians who have been found to have immunity to a new strain that was last seen in 1918. However the evidence is scant at best.

flu the first time I took the flu shot. It took me 10 years before I got another shot. The doctor explained that they don't shoot you with the live virus anymore. I have never had a immune reaction since the 1970's. . .?

31. Vaccines weaken the immune system -- NOT.
Edited on Sun Dec-04-11 08:44 AM by BadgerKid
Do you advocate mandated exposure to polio, mumps, measles, etc., just to be sure we keep our immune systems strong?

The whole point is to expose people to weakened virus to prime people's immune systems before the real things comes along.

EDIT: I guess there is an argument to be made where if your immune system is already weaker for some reason, then you would want avoid deliberate exposure because any exposure might make you sick as a dog. You know, the old fashioned way by avoiding sick people, washing hands, etc. In other words, your chances of not getting sick would be greater by not getting the shot.

The flu vaccine doesn't work equally well in all people. It’s most effective in healthy adults. In young children, the flu vaccine is a little less effective -- about 66% -- at preventing the flu. It’s more effective as children get older.

After middle age, your immunity naturally becomes weaker. The flu vaccine won’t work as well as it once did. But since the flu virus is much more dangerous for older people, it’s crucial that they get the vaccine. Even in cases where it doesn’t prevent the flu, it can still reduce the risk of serious side effects. Studies show that in older people who do not live in a care facility, the flu vaccine can cut the risk of hospitalization (for flu and pneumonia) by 30% to 70%. In people who do live in a nursing home or care facility, the flu vaccine is 50% to 60% effective in preventing hospitalization and 80% effective in preventing death from a flu complication.

but, we are both generally healthy and no one we know has a compromised immune system so, I am not planning on us getting vaccinated this year. I make the decision year by year and it is usually dependent on the health of those we may have contact with.

22. I'm an asthmatic, so I get the flu shot.......
....and now the pneumonia shot as well, every year. I always get flu "symptoms" for a couple days after, but the last time I acutally had the flu (2001), I was completely out of commission for 5 days and nearly wound in the hospital. I happily trade a couple days of feeling kinda crappy to keep from getting that sick again.

78. One pneumonia shot lasts years. I had one and the doctor said I wouldn't need another
one for 10 years. I just thought I'd mention that since those pneumonia shots are really rough--my doctor said it's the most painful shot to get, and I agree! I know what you mean about mild flu symptoms after a flu shot. I get that too, but it's very minor, and like you said, NOTHING like the nightmare of the actual flu.

36. It was absolutely mandantory for me...
When I served...Not just the flu shot but a whole array of shots were mandatory especially if you were qualified for world wide deployment.

I did not know of anyone getting out of shots while i was in unless you had a true medical reason why you should not get a certain shot.

The Typhoid Shot was the worst shot I had to get...It not only made you feel nasty sometimes after getting it but it always made your arm so freaking sore!! If your buddies knew you got a Typhoid shot they would punch your shoulder when you were not expecting it! Fun times! LOL!

I do not take non-specific shots for something that may or may not come my way. If its indicated and warranted, then I'll do it, but just to take a shot against some strain of flu that may or may not become the hit of the year seems to me to be absurd.

stories about our lives are just fine. When people communicate, we often relate personal experiences to the subject.

I think the fact I have to explain basic human conversation to you is a sign you're thinking with your emotions, as opposed to your logic. Just a little guess.

I've had the Swine Flu in the 70's and the Hong Kong flu in the late 60's. Both times I though I was dying. Real flu is horrible and I will always get a shot.

50. I never get a flu shot.
I've had the flu exactly four times in my entire almost-54 years (I don't count the time my mother had the Asiatic flu while pregnant with me). Those four times were the four years I was in the Air Force and had to get the shots. We got swine flu shots twice, but I was already getting sick from the first one.

And before you say "you can't get the flu from the shot", well, whatever. I know how it was with me, and I'm not the only one I know of.

61. For some it might be mandatory.
For some it might only be because it's free. Otherwise they might not get it.

For some, it might be because they feel they are in an at-risk group.

For some it might be because someone at home is in an at-risk group.

For some, it might be because someone on DU will call them anti-science, or illogical or foolish or something if they don't. :)

There may be other reasons. But I'm more interested in the reasons from those who don't get it. I never have and maybe never will. I rarely get a cold or flu, even when I teach classes with several students coughing and sniffling all class and take public transport where people are stuffed in like sardines. I like the idea of building up natural immunity even though it may be unscientific. Seems to work for me.

114. All those translate to "avoid getting influenza".
except "building up natural immunity" since the only way to do that is to get the virus. You can strengthen your immune system to react more quickly, but the only way to get immune is to be infected with a live virus, or have a vaccine of dead virus injected into you.

To prevent spreading it to others, including the most vulnerable among us. You know, the liberal/progressive thing to do. Pity how many there are on DU who oppose this for irrational and ridiculous reasons.

62. Was supposed to.
I'm 'essential personnel' and flu shots were provided at work. They had them on a Tuesday I was off, though, (I'm in a 24/7 group) so no one noticed that I didn't come in for the shot. I figured I'd hit the Rite Aid or something, but never got around to it.

Bad news, though: I've since contracted the flu, and it turned into bronchitis. Awesome.

*koff*

Yuck.

The government encourages me to stop at red lights, so I do. Seems to be the one of the most effective means of traffic safety outside of the drivers ourselves. All things being equal, I imagine the same may be said of flu-shots.

I'm 60+ with compromised lungs, need to do everything possible to avoid getting the flu.

Prior to 3 years ago, I hadn't taken a flu shot since I was a teenager. But with lung issues, I now make sure to get my pheumonia & flu vaccines now.

I used to think that I'd get the flu whenever I had a flu shot. That has not been the case in recent years. I've had no reaction to the shots at all.

107. I won't.
The flu is not likely to kill me in my current state of health and I shun others' company when I do feel under the weather. The flu shot is a crap shoot. It is, at best, an educated guess as to which virus strains are likely to be prevalent this year. I don't place a great deal of confidence in their ability to prevent flu contagion. For those reasons, nope.
