Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich has some advice for members of the Occupy Wall Street movement: take a bath and get a job.

“Jefferson said that people that want to be both free and ignorant are asking for something that has never been and will never be,” the former House Speaker told an audience during a debate at the First Federated Church in Des Moines, Iowa Saturday. “Captain John Smith said in 1607 in the first English speaking permanent colony to the aristocrats who paid their way and didn’t want to work, ‘If you don’t work, you won’t eat.’”

They have this anonymous "sound off" feature where you can phone in a response to a question every week day. The question was about whether the crack down on OWS protesters was ok. Only 2 out of 16 said they should crack down on the bankers. Every single other response was "they should get a job."

The point about there being no jobs to get went missing in these folks heads...

That's when I knew this was the RW talking point cranking it out...

Captain John Smith was making the point that if you do not contribute to the (collective) success of the colony, you will be cut off. And paying does not equal contributing.

Smith was scolding those who were only concerned with themselves and their comforts, and who were not trying to ensure the colony succeeded for everyone. In other words, ‘If you don’t work, you won’t eat’ was his message to the colony's equivalent of the 1%.
