University Of Texas College GOP Preisdent: Obama Assassination ‘Tempting’
http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2011/11/16/370552/ut-college-gop-preisdent-obama-assassination-tempting/

After police arrested a man who allegedly shot at the White House, the president of the University of Texas College Republicans tweeted that the idea of killing President Obama was “tempting.” “Y’all as tempting as it may be, don’t shoot Obama,” wrote Lauren Pierce. In an interview with ABC News, she said the comment was a “joke,” but said an attempted assassination would “only make the situation worse.” The group’s vice president, Cassie Wright, acknowledged that Pierce’s comment perhaps “shouldn’t be said,” but also offered a defense, saying, “she’s made a positive statement in a way.” Later, Pierce apologized: “I apologize for my previous tweet. It was in poor taste and and should never have been written.” Earlier this month, she tweeted a picture of a sign that read, “zoo has African lion, White House has a lyin’ African.”

(end snip)

I think Ms. Pierce needs a visit from the Secret Service, IMHO. Let her tell them what is funny and what isn't.

5. Ms. Pierce may be seeing the inside of a jail cell pretty soon
The Secret Service doesn't take a joke very well when it comes to threats against the President.

7. This is a symptom of one of America's greatest problems....
No longer is there respect for one another in this country. It is all about "me, me, me" and to hell with everyone else.

I suggest there are two main drivers of this phenomenon.....

(1) The "more and more and more is better" syndrome driven by unrelenting advertising and consumerism. Advertising and credit crammed down people's throats. A consumer=driven culture that glorifies "things" to make you better than others

(2) GOP and "self-reliance" policies that undermine the concept that we are a society, not a collection of individual self-serving robots. Government (which is the ultimate expression of the collective) is bad whereas individualism (where the one with the most money and crap wins) is good.

Bush's policies were an excellent example of this........ after the terrorist attacks on 9/11 he told everyone to go spend some money rather than suggesting we needed to collectively reflect. His tax policies allowed wealth to continue to accrue at the top. He sent young men and women who, although a volunteer force, is increasingly made up of minorities and those with few other choices. He didn't ask the entire nation to sacrifice to pay for the war efforts. I agree with the initial decision to go into Afghanistan but felt once the Taliban and AQ were flushed out we should have left this to the Afghans to decide and use our drones to eliminate any training camps. But Iraq was folly.

When you have a Congressman yell "liar" during a SOTU address and this bimbo from UT suggesting that killing the president is "tempting" we have lost our moral compass. And we didn't lose it because we don't let a crucifix hang on the door of the courthouse or mandate the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, or because a woman has a right to choose or because we have begun to realize that gays are not of the devil. We lost our moral compass when we lost sight of the things that made us a people...our compassion, our willingness to go in together to win a war, etc.

On a side note I walk my dogs in my neighborhood, mixed residential and commercial. I take two plastic grocery bags (re-used after each walk) on every long walk we take. I always return with two bags full of cigarette butts and packages, water bottles, soda and beer cans, McDonald's bags, Subway cups, etc. Usually about 75% of it is recyclable. But it is just another indication of the lack of respect we have for one another and their property when people just discard their refuse anywhere it pleases them not to mention that we aren't thinking about how we are trashing this incredibly beautiful and fragile world in which we live.
