Parents turn teen in for raping 5yr girl at McDonalds play area

http://cleveland.cbslocal.com/2011/11/14/ohio-teen-arrested-for-allegedly-raping-5-year-old-girl-at-mcdonalds/

Authorities in southwest Ohio have charged a 13-year-old boy with raping a 5-year-old girl at a McDonald’s play area.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office said Monday that the alleged assault occurred Oct. 29 at a McDonald’s in the Cincinnati suburb of Anderson Township. Sheriff’s spokesman Steve Barnett says the girl’s grandmother was nearby in the restaurant at the time.

Judson Pickard, the owner of the McDonald’s location, said in a statement that he will cooperate fully with the investigation.

“The safety and well-being of my customers, especially children, is extremely important,” he said. “As a parent myself, I was very upset to learn about this situation.”

Barnett says the boy’s parents brought him to the sheriff’s office last week after authorities released a security camera photo of the suspect. Barnett says the boy was taken to the juvenile detention center

4. How does a 5-year-old get raped at McDonald's with nobody seeing/hearing anything?

7. Sadly this becomes an issue when designing playgrounds
I do some volunteer work for a pro-playground foundation (K street has some weird stuff on it) and there's a design principle in modern playgrounds that avoids niches where adults can't see what's going on (though fortunately bullying is more what's being thought of there) -- a lot of pre-fabs like you find in front of fast food restaurants were designed before people were thinking that way, so you still have a lot of places kids can hide and do bad things.

9. Mom used to take us to McDonald's
for the playground. My sister got stuck in one of the things - I think it was mayor McCheese because she gained weight. It wasn't very fun, for sure, to hear her howl.

There is definitely a different mindset these days for playgrounds, and I'm glad.

6. I wonder if this boy had a history of questionable
sexual behavior that had not yet escalated to rape. Maybe his parents were aware of other incidents.

This is sad for everyone.

8. These parents care
They did the right, but painful thing, to help their son.

I feel horrible for the little girl to be violated in such a way.

I'm pretty much speechless over such an act of violence.

10. I'm not clear why people are congratulating the parents.
They brought him in only after authorities released a security camera photo of him. In other words, they had no choice.
