On Facebook, from Occupy the Tundra (this is a new photo - you'll like it)

Yup'ik Elder Esther Green instructed me to post this photo of her "Occupying the River." She also would like to include the sloughs, streams, brooks, and ocean. She wanted to be a part of the Occupy movement in her own way, while ice fishing for "lush fish." She does not want Pebble Mine or Donlin Creek mine "bothering the fish" and is worried about the impact those mines will have on the fish. Oh, and I am supposed to also post at the Occupy Wall Street page so they will know she supports them.

8. On the ice?

It's a tool used to scoop ice shavings from out of the hole, so you have a clean hole into the water. My father and I used one every time we drilled a hole in the ice when we went ice fishing, way back when.

edit: you have to use it periodically if it's cold enough, because the hole will start to freeze shut.

20. My guess is she's somewhere near Bethel or Aniak, Alaska,

since she mentions the Donlin Creek Mine (where my brother works as camp manager, incidentally). Western Alaska, in any event -- Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta.
