U.S. Bank temp says Occupy post got her fired
Article by: JENNIFER BJORHUS , Star Tribune
Updated: November 4, 2011 - 8:13 PM

<snip>

Kim Wangnoo said she figured her Facebook post was harmless.

From home, the U.S. Bank temp jumped into a discussion on Occupy Minnesota's page about the power-washing of the bank's windows across the street from where the protesters are camped out. She called the window cleaning a waste of time and money.

Then she lost her job.

Wangnoo, a 46-year-old mother of four in Brooklyn Center, insists the bank canned her over what she described as a few mild Facebook comments. She called it "creepy."

The Minneapolis-based bank, which has been a frequent target of Occupy Wall Street demonstrations, confirmed that Wangnoo no longer works there. It declined to discuss the terms of her departure.

But spokesman Tom Joyce confirmed the company sent memos cautioning employees not to engage protesters. "There have been e-mails sent out from our corporate security team ensuring the safety of our employees," Joyce said. "It was really more of a safety issue."

1. Corporations insist on unquestioning loyalty from their employees.
Yet offer none in return.

8. In 2008 a friend of mine who works for a financial institution was attacked
There have been very few instances of it but guess what when it's someone you know getting their face smashed in with a crowbar you don't care how fucking few they are.

9. uhh huh
and of course it was a protester that smashed someone in the face with a crowbar, right? :sarcasm:

That must have been in the newspapers -- month and year perhaps, so it can be verified? After all, in 2008 there wasn't all that many incidents of violence against bankers. Should be simple to pull up newspaper accounts.

10. it's not paranoia, it's a *control* issue
They don't want any of the employees telling the great unwashed just what shitty salaries and benefits the workers are making. That would be good ammunition for protesters to talk to the media about.

6. It should change TOMORROW!
Credit Unions are awesome, not-for-profit, and keep money in your community. Mine pays 1.25% in checking accounts. US Bank sucks eggs.

5. Sadly, you have no rights when you enter into employment with a company.
Especially if you are making comments about the company that you work for. A definite no-no.

It's not a "safety issue", it's that the employers are scared.

7. Fuck it. I wrote an LTE about Occupy and trashed my employer, Walmart, at the end...
I am not afraid. I constantly leave papers all around the store to increase awareness about CEO pay. If they want to fire me for voicing my opinion, I will tweet my store's phone and fax on the #OWS hashtag and begin picketing outside the store right away. I will go out with the most nonviolent bang possible. It's my dream.
