Occupy Omaha protesters at 24th and Farnam Streets on Tuesday night.

City officials say they are trying to reach a compromise with a small clutch of Occupy Omaha protesters who have camped at the intersection of 24th and Farnam Streets.

Aida Amoura, Mayor Jim Suttle's spokeswoman, said a woman claiming to be affiliated with the protesters approached city officials about getting a permit to occupy part of Elmwood Park.

The city would grant a permit for them to stay in the park during normal hours, Amoura said, if they pay a daily fee of $35 for the permit and provide liability insurance and a security plan for the protest. Those stipulations would be imposed on anyone who wanted to stage a large gathering in the park, she said.

But officials said they have no idea whether the woman, whom they declined to identify, is actually affiliated with people camped at 24th and Farnam Streets. Officials have no idea who speaks for the local incarnation of a leaderless and nebulous nationwide movement.
