Seniors Group Launches $1 Million Campaign to Stop Social Security Cuts
National Committee Launches $1 Million
Ad Campaign to Stop Social Security Cuts
By NCPSSM | January 18, 2011

Barbara B. Kennelly, a former Congresswoman and now President and CEO of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, has announced her organization’s commitment to a new $1 million advertising campaign to stop Congressional or White House proposals that would cut Social Security benefits as part of any debt or deficit reduction plan.

The first phase of the campaign continues this week in Washington, D.C. with a new radio ad by Social Security Coalition leaders Kennelly, Nancy Altman of Social Security Works and Roger Hickey from Campaign for America’s Future, urging lawmakers to keep their hands off Social Security. The National Committee’s “Hands Off” campaign ads can be also heard on NCPSSM’s website at http://www.ncpssm.org/news/radioads/.

3. You're welcome. They are also launching a "Truth Squad" on Feb, 1.

2. Spend another Milllion (at least) to lobby for lower wages for Congress
and the Defense Dept toys, people like Allan Simpson, Bowes and all the other committees thinking about cutting benefits for people who really need them.

5. What happened to AARP?
They were very aggressive in their fight against Bush when he tried to privatize SS?

I'm not that familiar with them but I do remember them from 2005 and apparently they were very effective.

Glad someone is getting ready to fight. We're not hearing much from anyone other than Bernie Sanders so far.

6. Unfortunately, AARP has been completely silent on this. Very disappointing but not surprising.

7. AARP was taken over by the health insurance
industry and Republican lobbyists back at the beginning of the Bush administration. Didn't you see the glowing puff piece they did on George Bush this month in their magazine, Modern Majority? They still try to pay lip service to senior's needs but they aren't the same old AARP of my parents generation.

8. No, I didn't see that, but that's pretty sickening and explains
the silence. So they are buying up anything that might be able to help the American people?

Thanks for the sad explanation. I guess we can count them on the side of cutting SS.

11. Actually, the game is to privatize it.
There's all that money sitting in the Social Security fund that's mostly invested in Treasury bonds and Wall Street wants to get their hands on it. But it never works. Investing your SS funds in private industry hasn't worked in the two places it was tried, England and Chile. The retirees mostly lost their retirement funds and founds themselves with nothing when it was time for them to retire. Since they had opted out of the general government retirement program they had no recourse. In the meantime, the retirement financial advisors whistled all the way to the bank.

9. Yes. I think their focus on selling products hinders their ability to lobby for the right causes.

10. Absolutely correct!
AARP is now merely another right-wing front group that is primarily interested in making money through selling insurance. They will fully support whatever makes their top executives the most money.

12. That's not all they sell.
Ever notice how every AARP member receives exactly the same junk mail?

AARP has been co-opted to a degree that I never could have imagined a decade ago.

13. I'm 37 - not an AARP member
And I get their junk mail - and I'm not happy about it. :-)
