Workers still missing after Kan. grain accident
Three people remain unaccounted for and two others are hospitalized in critical condition following an explosion at a grain elevator in northeast Kansas that killed three workers.

Atchison City Manager Trey Cocking says officials are weighing whether it's safe to send fire teams into the facility, which sustained significant damage in the Saturday night explosion seen as far as Missouri.

Among the missing are one worker from the elevator company and two state grain inspectors.

Two other victims who were admitted to the burn unit of University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kan., were listed in critical condition Sunday morning.

Grain may contain human body parts.

2. I used to work at grain elevators, including Bartlett (in a different state).
Always wary of explosions--they have dust containment systems, but I guess they're not foolproof. My first week of work, I had to watch a video about grain dust explosions and people injured in them. This is sad--hope they find the victims.

5. Yes--one of the elevators I worked at exploded a few years ago, after
I had quit--fortunately no injuries or fatalities, though. It's just a dangerous line of work, particularly when they're loading trains--lots of dust, lots of moving parts from conveyors and machinery to cause a spark.

ATCHISON, KS (AP) -
Crews have suspended rescue efforts for three people missing since an explosion at a Kansas grain elevator that killed three workers and injured two.

Atchison City Manager Trey Cocking says the search was suspended Sunday while crews waited for more specialized equipment to help in the search at the Bartlett Grain Co. elevator. Cocking said earlier that the company had been weighing whether it was safe to send rescue teams into the facility, which sustained significant damage in the Saturday night explosion.

Cocking said four other people associated with the explosion escaped without injuries. No names were being released pending notification of families.

Among the missing was one worker from the elevator company and two state grain inspectors.
