Why Do You Pay $1.2 Trillion a Year to Prop Up a Vast, Secretive National Security State?
Tomdispatch.com / By Tom Engelhardt

A blanket of secrecy over our military complex ensures that most Americans have no idea what’s being done with their money.

Think of Iraq as the AIG of wars -- the only difference being that the bailout there didn’t involve just three payouts. More than eight years after the Bush administration invaded that country, the bailout is, unbelievably enough, still going. Even as the U.S. military withdraws, the State Department is planning to spend billions more in taxpayer dollars to field an army of hired-gun contractors to replace it. Afghanistan? It could have been the Lehman Brothers of conflicts, but when Barack Obama entered the Oval Office he chose the Citigroup model instead, and surged troops in twice in 2009. In other words, he double-TARPed that war, and ever since, the bailout money has been flooding in.

Until now -- as the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations make clear -- “too big to fail” has meant only one set of institutions: the plundering financial outfits that played such a role in driving the U.S. economy off a cliff in 2008, looked like they might themselves collapse in a heap of bad deals and indebtedness, and were bailed out by Washington. Isn’t it finally time to expand the too-big-to-fail category to include the Pentagon, the U.S. Intelligence Community, and more generally the National Security Complex?

There is, of course, one major difference between those bailed-out financial institutions and the Complex: however powerful the banks may be, however much money financial outfits and Wall Street sink into K-Street lobbyists and the election campaigns of politicians, however much influence the U.S. Chamber of Commerce may wield, when too-big-to-fail financial institutions totter, they have to come to the federal government hat (and future bonuses) in hand.

For the Pentagon and the National Security Complex, it’s quite another matter. These days it’s only a slight exaggeration to claim that they are Washington and that their very size, influence, and power protects them from the consequences of failure.

Welcome to the raison d'être for your government, fellow Americans. It's been a long time coming and very few people could see what has been done.

The National Security State is now the primary symbiotic organism which infests the body politic, it transcends party politics and is the driving force behind our economy.

It's not about security, it's all about money.

"Security" is merely the tool by which an American Oligarchy now has control over our society.

Unless everyone decides that our fear based path is changed to one without fear, it's going to be bigger, more pervasive and more secret…

It'll be the thing that will eventually destroy America from within, instead of the phantom threats from beyond that barely threaten you and I.

1. It's to keep us all safe from the boogie man
And if they told us about it, they would have to kill us or so I am constantly told by my oxymoron (military intelligence) brother.

2. Your brother knows what's going on, but he's decided to promote the lie
I spent the last part of my Air Force in Intel and I saw how much of a scam it was back then. I had the benefit of working at the Pentagon 20 years ago and saw first hand what was going on.

He should spend sometime in the Beltway to get an idea of who he's really working for.

8. K&R.
Amazing bribe-engine for Congressmen and Senators.

FOLLOW THE MONEY.

Btw: when we 9/11-WTC survivors discovered that FAA had intentionally avoided locking/securing the airliner cockpits, we knew the deal was cooked.

After the Air France Flight 8969 suicide-hijacking scheme -- out of al-Qaeda -- everybody else spent the $200 for good locks and installed security bars. Everybody but our airlines, sabotaged by PNAC dominated "national security" Benedict Arnolds.

Ultimately, that's the hold they have over every U.S. Citizen today. They crossed a line (several lines) in the GWOT, and now we're all fair game for warrantless wiretapping, entrapment, kidnapping, detention without trial, torture or targeted killing.

You don't even have to take up arms against them.

It's the Middle Ages, again.

5. Parasites are not free from parasitism...hyperparasitism
exploits piles of resources where ever they are. Xe/Blackwater is a great example of this.

Come up with a software idea to provide security inside the security apparat and you too can have access to the key that locks the doors to the horde of gold.

Even when we vote for change, we don't get it.

9. NYC cops arrested yesterday for running a gun-import ring -- same difference.
They brought in guns by the thousands.

Sold them illegally.

Pumped up the murder/shooting rates for NYC.

Got more cops hired, promoted, etc.

FOLLOW THE MONEY.

Too bad they were caught by the Feds, eh ??? This was so good for the Law and Order pols and NYPD....

Perfect for driving up fear.

10. Excellent post.
I know there are others like me who cringe at paying taxes because we know it is going to prop up this horrible military machine. We'd love to see that money go directly to education, infrastructure, social programs etc.

11. In today's Washington, education, infrastructure and social programs are all secondary
For example, there's a massive new building complex that was just built, right off of I-95, that's dedicated to this National Security apparatus.

Not for education, or infrastructure, or social programs… but to accommodate the sheer massive growth of our war making and intelligence gathering capability.

Don't think that this growth is going to stop anytime soon.

We're well past the tipping point.

12. We left the Washington area nearly 10 years ago -
but I got quite an education while living there. There's so much money in the gov't contracts (aka belt-way bandits) and that's nearly all defense related. If only a part of that could go to revamping Medicare and turning it into a single payer program we could help so many people (as opposed to global killing).

Like so many others I've just grown more disheartened during this administration. If someone young and energetic like Obama (with the people clearly behind him - as they were when he was elected) can't change things, I'm not sure what will short of revolution.
