1. This is a great idea - except for one thing: many CU's have restrictive membership
requirements.

I'm curious why no credit union has sought to compete with any of the banks, in light of their superior low pricing.

5. People aren't going to run on the bank in order to put it in their mattresses.
First off, banks would close before that happened. Second, nobody is going to do that in order to teach banks a lesson. If the suggestion is to move from a bank to a CU, then there need to be better resources on the web and elsewhere for those who want to do that. Additionally, CU's need to relax membership requirements.

11. I've seen these before, but you need to be union, member of a parish, gov't employee,
etc., etc. None apply to me, and I'm not that special, lol.

Anyway, I'm kicking and reccing because I support the idea. :hi:

16. FYI: For many Credit Unions, you just need to live or work in the area
I'm nothing special, either, but my CU is open to those who live or work in my county.

Another credit union in my area says that it is open to "anyone who lives, works, worships, attends school, or volunteers" in my county or two other adjoining counties.

Look around: you may find something similar in your area.

24. Yes, I joined one close by recently and only had to live in this county
which I clearly do. But I showed them proof.

4. But many do not. In a few clicks I found a local alternative for you...
Delta Community Credit Union. Open to any state resident, with two local branches in Marietta.

https://www.deltacommunitycu.com/

Also worth investigating, regional/local banks that are pumping money into their communities.

13. I live near Marietta, but those locations are too far to drive.
My Bank of America is just around the corner and there is another one a mile down the road. Why would I want to give up the convenience of my bank's location and drive about 15 miles through heavy traffic to the credit union??

14. Well, you might want to give up the convenience BECAUSE IT'S FUCKING BANK OF AMERICA!!!
if you don't get that, then why are you even asking the question?

15. A 15 minute drive? My bank is further than that.
But by all means don't give up the convenience of your precious BofA. I'm sure they'll reward you for your loyalty.

sacrifices.

PS: Bank on line.

31. There are also CUs that have much less restrictive membership.
Pentagon Federal Credit Union is apparently the easiest credit union to get into. The easiest way to be eligible to join is through membership of one of two military support groups (National Military Family Association or Voices for America's Troops), and joining them costs $20 or $15 respectively.

Many other Credit Unions these days are allowing membership like this by means of an individual becoming a member of an affiliated organization.

As for credit unions competing with banks - they do just that but because they don't have zillions of branches, ATM machines, or advertising budget the word just doesn't get around. Some of the bigger ones do and have set aside money for a more aggressive marketing campaign (those who typically allow membership based on geography rather than company or organization affiliation) and this helps out them and also the whole credit union movement.

Mark.

17. If everyone waits until Nov. 5th...
...you run the risk of really long lines and waits and maybe pissing off a lot of people who just want to do their banking.

My advice is to send a message to the big banks when it's convenient to you, not necessarily wait until Nov. 5th.

18. oh noes! the horrorz of long lines and pissing people off! what wilz we do???
But maybe everyone should follow Randome's advice, take a Prozac, chill, and wait 'till it's convenient.

THAT will show 'em!

27. Prozac? Chill?
The banks will get the message if they lose money. It doesn't matter if it's in one day or ten.

And some DU'ers, I'm sure, have families and jobs they need to return to so it may not be convenient for them, either.

Just an opinion.

21. You are missing the point by a mile. First of all, long lines will certainly
help the banks notice and maybe even the media, unless there is a traffic accident on I-405. Second, there are going to be a lot of people "pissed off" before we win this revolution. Get used to it. Third, go ahead and live a little, be inconvenienced, it wont hurt much. Looks like we are fighting the "we dont want inconvenience" generation.

The Revolution is here, it's going to be very inconvenient.

32. Nov 5th is a Saturday. How much banking gets done on Saturday?
Plus moving banks can be a pain, especially if you're moving everything whole-scale all at once.

By Nov 5th, my Wells Fargo account will be closed.

28. I joined a local credit union last Friday
Its going to take a couple of weeks at least, but I expect to get everything closed down and transferred over from Chase and one other bank. The hard part is going in to close accounts - because I actually know and like all the counter people...

30. I'm working in South Korea this month - I've gone on-line to my
accounts at a credit union and local savings bank and paid bills, checked to see that my paycheck was deposited, transferred cash to my kids at college and buy some early Christmas presents. Don't let the big banks flim-flam you - credit unions and savings banks are full service operations! To top it off, when some kid hacks my card to purchase on-line gaming, I get to talk to a real, live person to get things straightened out!
