Say something once, why say it again?
Excerpt from a recent job application rejection letter:

"We received a large number of applications for the position, and we have determined that another candidate is the most qualified for the requirements of our opening. So, the purpose of this message is to let you know that you have not been selected for the position and that we have offered the position to another candidate."

Somehow, this struck me as three kicks in the gut, instead of the usual single kick.

:spank:

3. It's a bit redundant, for sure.
There's no nice way to tell someone they didn't get the job.

9. That's true.
I have to give them a couple of points just for responding. All too often, you submit the application, and that's the last you hear of it.

29. That's still a very disheartening statement for the job-seeker.
That's what I mean. If you don't get the job, you're not a happy person about that fact. Not everyone is skilled in breaking bad news gently and compassionately. More's the pity.

A lot of places never notify unsuccessful applicants at all.

40. I know what you mean. I'm about to be laid off and I'm old. I doubt I'll get any of those letters,
Edited on Fri Oct-21-11 02:35 PM by valerief
because I doubt I'll even make it to the interview stage! Old people (though I'm not old enough for SS) are disposable in the US. We're the "useless eaters".

11. You could be a total asshole, and write to that person's boss, saying something like
"I recently received a rejection letter from ......, a personnel assistant at your firm, rejecting me for the ...... position to which I had applied. I could not help but notice that my rejection letter was very poorly worded as well as redundant, and did not put your corporation in the best light. Accordingly, I would like to apply for a position as a personnel assistant in your offices. I'm quite sure I could prepare correspondence to reject candidates in a much more compassionate and efficient manner, to the benefit of your organization. Yours sincerely, ....."

Poorly worded and redundant are NOT synonyms, if that's where you were going. They are two separate conditions.

Maybe it's a test. The applicant that contacts them about their letter is the one that gets the job. They might be looking for a go-getter.

Or maybe just this picture:

at the beginning of this century, and at a time when my wife was sick. I'll always remember it and the bastards who kept saying "no" to me.

Good luck to you on escaping that hell earlier than we did.

Or you could put the pic of the dude
flipping the finger on the inside of one of those cards that plays the Na Na Na Na, Na Na Na Na, Hey Hey, Goodbye! song when you open it up. At least then you know they put some thought into it.

The look on the guys face cracks me up every time I see it. He's just so happily giving you the finger.

35. This was an application for a county job. It seems they subcontracted the processing of resumes...
...and rejections. I'm thinking that a person, somewhere, wrote the form letter they send out, and that at least one other person, somewhere, approved the wording... but, in this day and age, you never know.

I used to be sad about things like this. But then I realized that
anger not sadness is the energy.
Ha...someone who gets a letter like that from that company should call their HR
and tell them that they received a letter and are not sure what it means.
Then ask them to send a more articulate response in triplicate
because he's running out of toilet paper.

36. I don't see any repetition there.
It could have been that "another candidate is the most qualified", but they decided to hire you because you're better looking or more closely related to the owners.

It could have been that "you have not been selected for the position" because nobody was selected for the position.

Finally, I should point out that repetition can be worthwhile. See the following Laurel and Hardy video for details:

She had applied for two positions with the same organization, and got the emails for both back-to-back. It was a bit discouraging.

The job hunt can definitely be a drag. Hang in there, wakemewhenitsover. :hi:
