Miss America 2011: "Wikileaks was actually based on espionage" And she might be an idiot.
Miss America Hates Wikileaks, Might Be An Idiot
By Pandora Young
January 16, 2011

Teresa Scanlan of Nebraska was crowned Miss America on Saturday evening in Las Vegas. During the question category of the pageant, Miss Scanlon was asked about Wikileaks, specifically how to balance people’s right to know with the need for government security? Her rambling response:

You know, when it came to that situation, it was actually based on espionage, and when it comes to the security of our nation we have to focus on security first, and then people’s right to know. Because it’s so important that everyone in our borders is safe, and so we can’t let things like that happen, and they must be handled properly, and I think that was the case.

Miss Scanlon plans to make a career in politics.

Miss America 2011: "Wikileaks was actually based on espionage."
January 15, 2011

Miss Nebraska, Teresa Scanlan, became champion of the 2011 Miss America pageant tonight. She has deep thoughts on foreign policy and radical transparency.

She won after strutting in a black bikini and a white evening gown, playing "White Water Chopped Sticks" on piano and telling the audience that when it comes to the website Wikileaks, security should come before public access to government information.

"You know when it came to that situation, it was actually based on espionage, and when it comes to the security of our nation, we have to focus on security first and then people's right to know, because it's so important that everybody who's in our borders is safe and so we can't let things like that happen, and they must be handled properly," she said.

1. And a bimbo is a source for this why?
I can't see why her opinion on this would matter at all.

3. Millions saw her response which was of course applauded by the audience.

She might become a new hero of the right-wingnuts and she is interested in a political career.

I wonder if she can see China from her front porch?

26. It matters to the masses who will now quote it as gospel.
Where do you think the average American gets their news, and where did SHE get that talking point?

Do they choose these people for their looks, because she's not particularly striking in the looks dept. Lots of makeup and the standard dyed-blond stiff hairdo, but I know a lot of women who are far more attractive and with less makeup and their natural colored hair.

Or are they chose as 'spokespersons' for the Corps who will simply absorb and regurgitate the propaganda we are so familiar with, and which passes for news in this country?

If it is the latter, I'd say she deserved to win.

If they ever picked someone smart we'd all die of shock!

11. You want a comfy life doing movies, commercial endoresements, and magazine covers? Read this.
You want to be crucified in the right wing media as a complete loon, stripped of your title later for some banal and obscure reason, and endlessly harassed on Fox, CNBC, and CNN for the next 10 years, than say what is actually on your mind.

I hate to state a very dumb sounding saying...but, "don't hate the playa' hate the game" seems very apropos here...remember who demographic audience of the Miss America pageant really is.

14. Wow 17!
I guess we have to get them younger and younger to be sure that they haven't been secretly married or bedded a goat in the past. What does this say about our society. These young women used to be in college or graduated from college before they make it to the big stage. Very sad indeed.

17. Ah yes, the insightful blather of another repuke brought up in an era of reduced rights.
"when it comes to the security of our nation we have to focus on security first, and then people’s right to know."

Because when that boot is on your face, it's okay, you will be told later why you were arrested.

Privacy is never an issue until it is. Security is fine for everyone until it isn't. Freedoms are just a concept until you need them.

Know your rights, these are your rights.

22. We found out more about this right-winger during her interview on "Fox and Friends"

She was "home schooled" and "the political arena really interests" her.

Her dream "is to be President or a Supreme Court justice".

She "clarified" her statement on WikiLeaks proclaiming there is "a gray area where free speech ends and national security must be imposed".

And she'll let it up to government officials to decide such matters.

running for beauty queen. Do you really expect her to be a rocket scientist?

I suspect that most intelligent women have no interest whatsoever in being crowned Miss America. Give the kid a break.

25. She's been indoctrinated and now being groomed by the far right.

17 year olds have played big roles as participants and frequently leaders in progressive social movements.

Don't put 17 year olds down or excuse their behavior be it for good or evil.

And some unfortunately have been drawn to the right, from skin-heads, to KKK'ers to tea-baggers.

"Hitler youth" were much younger.

30. Oh, please
She's a goddamn beauty queen. I'm not putting seventeen year olds down. But the majority of them DO NOT involve themselves in politics and have no interest in it whatsoever. And who really gives a damn what she thinks?

This is ridiculous.

So what's your point?

Who cares?

and then the Nixon transcripts. The first published version of the transcripts were redacted so heavily, they were hilarious. We weren't rocket scientists either but we did have a pulse. lol

31. When I was seventeen
I was campaigning for McGovern. But guess what? Most of my friends weren't. Most of my friends -- like most seventeen year olds -- couldn't have cared less about politics.

And I highly doubt that you would have run for beauty queen.

Sheesh, no wonder the world has such a negative opinion about Americans. I first learned that Scanlan was a right-wing sheep when I read Alan Colmes's blog. Ugh! These useful idiots - like Carrie "you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage" Prejean, Sarah Palin, and now Scanlan, and Jessica Simpson and other Hollywood airheads - are the women America worships, not Rachel Maddow or Amy Goodman? :puke: Why won't Scanlan address the problems that WikiLeaks exposed rather than attack the source?

And I just read the Wikipedia entry about Scanlan. Apparently she also addressed eating disorders during the pageant. Well that at least reveals she has a conscience.

Oh, in last year's Conservative Political Action Conference, the Human Events editor Jason Mattera remarked that unlike Woodstock, "our women are beautiful." I think that Scanlan is available?

And insert John Boehner or smirking chimp joke here.
