Twit Romney: God created America to rule the world
Edited on Fri Oct-07-11 12:45 PM by bigtree

__ Leading Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney declared Friday that God created America to lead the world, and accused President Barack Obama of deliberately weakening his nation.

Romney sought to bolster his credentials to serve as commander-in-chief as new polls showed him back at the top of the Republican field and in a tight potential head-to-head matchup with Obama ahead of next year's election.

"God did not create this country to be a nation of followers. America is not destined to be one of several equally balanced global powers," Romney said, in the most important foreign policy speech of the Republican campaign so far.

"America must lead the world, or someone else will," he said, arguing that the globe would be more dangerous absent a prime role for Washington . . .

I think the whole unrec thing is stupid. It allows an opening to troublemakers to just come here and unrec everything they can get their hands on. I've seen very interesting articles -- not trashing anyone -- get unrecced into oblivion. That's smells fishy to me. I can see the Hillary crowd unreccing something not flattering to Hillary and the same for Obama, but when stuff critical of the GOP is unrecced 10 different ways, I smell a rat. Stupid idea.

That might require some humility. You know...that thing that the Biblical Jesus mentions rather often, but modern Christians have turned into a dirty word? :nuke:

Abu Ghraib, Torture, Drone Murder...none of these things matter to them because they don't see them as a problem to begin with. Of course...I'm pretty sure you knew that already, so if I'm just preaching to the choir, forgive me...I JUST got up. :) :hi:

37. It should depend on what we're purporting to be leading on
Edited on Fri Oct-07-11 02:17 PM by bigtree
I'd be satisfied to acknowledge the preeminence of other countries in some areas where they excel. But the problem with seeking military dominance is in the motive. If we're actually talking about defenses, then there should be no quarter given to aggressors or those who threaten the nation or our allies.

The recent activity in Iraq and Afghanistan, however, has expended most of the military resources and blood for 'government-building'. Those ambitions foster more of an offensive posture that is reminiscent of empire-building and imperialism that kept nations at odds throughout the Cold War era.

Romney is anxious to start that all up again because he's completely ignorant of history (and a lot else). I'll bet he thinks he's exceptional in pining for it all.

52. that can be carried too far
The Bush administration, for example, liked to exploit the notion that the U.S, was losing it's 'military dominance' over potential rivals like China and Iran and needed to adopt a new family of nuclear weapons designed to address new sets of military requirements.

President Bush signed into law a Defense bill in 2004 which included $9 billion in funding for research on a next generation of nuclear weaponry.

"It's an important signal we're sending," then-President Bush remarked at the signing of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2004, "because, you see, the war on terror is different than any war America has ever fought."

Our enemies seek to inflict mass casualties, without fielding mass armies," Bush cautioned. "They hide in the shadows, and they're often hard to strike. The terrorists are cunning and ruthless and dangerous, as the world saw on September the 11th, 2001. Yet these killers are now facing the United States of America, and a great coalition of responsible nations, and this threat to civilization will be defeated."

However, this scattershot offensive was a posture usually reserved for nation-states who initiated or sponsored terrorists. The devastating neighboring effect of a potential nuclear engagement would contaminate innocent millions with the resulting radioactive fallout, and would not deter individuals with no known base of operations. Yet, his administration (inspired by PNAC and a large band of military industrial warriors in his administration), for the first time in our nation’s history contemplated using nuclear weapons on countries which themselves had no nuclear capability, or posed no nuclear threat.

So, I guess you're right . . . it does depend on what you want.

36. Mitt Romney: America must assert military might
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Friday said that he believes America should be "the strongest nation on earth" and argued for an increase in military spending to ensure that the United States can assert military dominance over other nations.

Sieg Heil!

We already outspend the entire rest of the world combined in military expenditures and this lunatic thinks we aren't spending or throwing our weight around enough?
