OWS: please, please protest to change the Citizen's United ruling.
Corporations are not people.

Money is not speech.

MSNBC: Congresswoman Edwards Discusses Const. Amendment to Overturn Citizens United
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oq7O72NmorI

I don't know if a constitutional ammendment is the best way to go, or if there is some other way for the Supreme Court's ruling to be overturned, but it

HAS. GOT. to go.

Thank you!

1. Better yet just sign the white house petition

I think protesters have enough on their hands
sure a sign or two would help ... but where would they go the Supreme Court?

Sign the petition

2. Have to disagree, it's not an 'or' thing, and they have the power of the moment,
and all of the energy of Egypt, Syria, etc. behind them. This is a moment in history we are witnessing, and with people asking what they are for, I hope they are for that.

End Citizen's United ruling, and stop treating corporations like people. That would be a revolution in and of itself.

So I guess we disagree.

4. Well, Citizens United
Edited on Thu Oct-06-11 05:11 AM by skepticscott
didn't say that corporations are people or that money is speech, nor did it depend on those assertions to support the decision, so what exactly does this mean?

6. Unlimited donations from corporations, protected as 'speech', are not that, and should not be law.

7. Citizens United did not
apply to or remove current limits on campaign contributions, either. You might actually try understanding the decision before you comment on it.

11. Do you think Citizen's United was a good ruling by the Supreme Court?
I find your statement rude, and the snark unhelpful, but I'm interested in understanding your perspective.

13. I can always learn more, and I'm sure my understanding can always improve.
I come here for that reason, partly, and for inspiration, and some relief from the intense stress of daily work and life.

I don't come here for more stress, and when I find conversations here go in a direction that seems to indicate that the other person is just shitting on me for entertainment, that is what the little ignore button is for.

20. CU was a constitutionally correct decision
Edited on Thu Oct-06-11 08:32 PM by skepticscott
That doesn't mean that it can't have undesirable consequences. Many highly praised Supreme Court decisions do. If you consider a decision that goes against the Constitution in favor of achieving a result that pleases you politically "good", then this was probably not a "good" decision for you.

19. Sorry if having your attempt to influence
other people's thinking with falsehoods challenged upsets you. It's really amazing how many people here think anything they post, no matter how ridiculous and at odds with the facts, should be treated with deferential respect and politeness. And then take pride in the length of their ignore list.

8. Seen on FB: "I will not believe that corporations are people until Texas executes one."

Come to think of it, that may have been our own La Lioness.

9. Reality: There will never be a Constitutional Amendment to overturn
Citizen's United.

Corporations/wealthy private interests control our government and finance and control many, or most, of our legislators.

In the Declaration of the OWS New York General Assembly, it is pretty much implied that the Citizen's United decision is being protested.

"They have influenced the courts to achieve the same rights as people, with none of the culpability or responsibility."

http://99anon.tumblr.com/post/10839760908/ows-declaration-of-the-occupation-of-new-york-city

If there is an occupation/protest coming to a city near you, please participate if you are at all able, and make and display a sign stating your concerns.

The Citizen's United decision absolutely has got to go.
