Keystone Pipeline last chance DC State Dept. hearing needs people vs. pipeline
From the Sierra Club in my email today:

Dear Wordpix,

Attend the Final State
Department Hearing on the
Keystone XL Pipeline

Friday, Oct. 7 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

This past week, the U.S. State Department held eight public hearings in the six states that the Keystone XL tar sands oil pipeline would run through. Residents of South Dakota, Montana, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas have turned out to voice their opposition to this project.

But more work needs to be done.

This Friday, the State Department will hold its very last public meeting in Washington, D.C.

Will you join hundreds of citizens and activists and attend the hearing and rally in Washington on Friday?

TransCanada and proponents of the pipeline have been attempting to constrain the voices of opposition to this pipeline at each of the hearings so far. We need to mobilize hundreds of citizens to attend this hearing to keep the pressure on the Obama administration to side with the citizens it represents, not big oil.

At noon on the day of the hearing, we will hold a final rally against this pipeline outside the hearing room. Join an impressive lineup of leaders and activists (including 350.org founder Bill McKibben) who have been working against this pipeline to demonstrate our opposition to this risky, dirty and expensive project!

Here are the details for the hearing:

WHAT: Final hearing on the Keystone XL tar sands oil pipeline
WHEN: Friday October 7, 2011
Hearing: 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Rally: Noon - 1 p.m.
WHERE: Atrium Hall, Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center on 14th St. NW between Pennsylvania & Constitution Avenues, Washington, D.C. 20004
RSVP: http://action.sierraclub.org/KeystoneXLHearing

As NASA scientist James Hansen said, opening up the Alberta tar sands will mean "game over" for Earth's climate.

The Keystone XL pipeline would allow the dirty tar sands industry to expand dramatically, threatening our climate, our drinking water, and our hope for a clean energy future.

We need to stop this massive dirty energy project before it's too late!

This is our last formal opportunity to tell the Obama administration that our country does not need this dirty, dangerous pipeline and he should say no to Keystone XL.

Help protect our land, water, air, and the health of our communities from this dangerous tar sands pipeline. RSVP to attend the tar sands public hearing!

Thanks for all you do for the environment.

Sincerely,

Kate Colarulli
Sierra Club

P.S. Want to learn more about what’s at stake and meet fellow activists and volunteers? Join us the night before the hearing (Thursday, October 6) for a screening of a new short documentary about the proposed Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. The 40-minute film will be introduced by the director, Oscar-nominated filmmaker Leslie Iwerks, and followed by a panel discussion with tar sands industry experts.

The event will be held at the Capitol Visitor's Center Theater (entrance down steps on 1st St NE in front of the Capitol, across from the Supreme Court) from 5:30 – 8:00 p.m.

1. Do DUers know what Canadian tar sands oil mining is like?
People need to visit the Canadian Rockies and see the tar sands (sort of like the New Jersey Pine Barrens) for themselves.

3. The tar sands aren't in the Rockies
The Rockies are in Southwest Alberta and the tar sands are in the Northeast. But yeah, it's incredibly destructive. It's altogether a lose-lose situation for everyone.
