Solidarity- Tammy Duckworth is running against Joe Walsh. Help her win!
http://www.tammyduckworth.com/

(Email I received today)
When my army buddies were pulling me out of a downed helicopter in Iraq, it didn’t matter to me if they were gay or straight.

On this historic day when we end the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy, I am proud that our Armed forces will never again discharge patriotic Americans because of their sexual orientation. Equality in our military is a good start.

America has many, many more challenges to overcome, many more battles to fight. We need everyone speaking up, everyone working together, and I need your help to make sure our voice is heard in Congress.

Members of my family have served our country during every period of conflict since the Revolution, and so have gay and lesbian Americans. It’s taken far too long, but today America is stronger because now all who can do the job and love their country may serve in our nation's military.

There's a lesson in the fight to repeal DADT -- when Americans of goodwill come together, we can accomplish anything.

We’re fighting two wars, and here at home we’re battling to bring our economy back. We need all hands on deck, starting with passing President Obama's jobs plan. The President's plan includes many of the same elements of the jobs plan I announced last week, including payroll tax cuts to get small businesses growing again and investments to rebuild our schools and create million of new jobs.

Help Tammy beat Joe Walsh... PLEASE!!!

2. I will proudly support her!! Good news is that if Walsh had any shame,

he would not try to run on "Family Values." Problem is: neither he nor the Republicans that he serves with have shame.

K&R!!!! :toast:

3. I certainly plan to do some groundwork for her in the coming year
We don't live in the 8th district (western suburbs), but it's an easy drive from Chicago. We went there back during the health care wars to participate in an OFA event. I'm hoping they'll be organizing crews for the district soon.

Another thing you can do (besides money) is to put pressure on veterans' organizations to endorse her. When she ran some years ago in another district, I was mortified that the VFW endorsed her opponent, who'd never served a day in the military in his life. Especially if you're a vet, please insist that American Legion, VFW, etc. support this candidate.

5. Great news that she's taking on Walsh, but
Why did she turn down a shot a Mark Kirk last year, only to go after a lesser prize in 2012? Not a criticism, I'm just honestly curious; I really wanted to see her as Illinois' junior senator.

8. Wow this is truly one of those battles between awesome and awful
Tammy would make a great Congressperson whereas DBD Walsh barely makes a useful person. Usually it's a choice between "oh God no" and "meh, I guess," but here there is a nice alternative to the condescending, know-nothing Walsh.

Go, Tammy, Go!!!!!

10. Update: She is NOT running against Joe Walsh (8th district redrawn)
I should have mentioned above that the 8th, in which Tammy is running, although currently represented by Joe Walsh (R), and formerly by Melissa Bean (D, has been redistricted, and will be largely Democratic now. Walsh will be running in the 14th CD, where he will face the Republican incumbent there.

One day after being named one of Congress's "most corrupt" representatives by the group Citizens For Responsibility And Ethics In Washington (CREW), U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Ill.) announced that he will run against a fellow Republican in Illinois' 14th District.

The announcement comes as Illinois Republicans are embroiled in a legal battle over redrawn congressional maps--which pushed Walsh's 8th District into a majority-Democratic district. His former playing field was drawn into Illinois' 14th district, which Republican Randy Hultgren currently represents. State Republicans say the Democrat-drawn maps violate the Federal Voting Rights Act, and hope a judge will rule in their favor.

I doubt the redistricting will be successfully challenged. Walsh is fleeing to safer territory.

In the 8th Democratic primary, Duckworth is doing extremely well; but her challenger is Raja Krishnamoorthi, who most recently ran for State Comptroller, and seems to be a pretty good guy. At any rate, the 8th is looking better for Democrats. Walsh and another Republican will have to duke it out in the 14th.
