Some People Just Are Not Paying Attention...
This morning I called my daughters boyfriend Mom to see if they were going to still fly another son with hurricane Irene in the forecast back to Rhode Island for a week, her response what hurricane,I said haven't you been watching the news or the internet?. She said oh things should be fine by the time he gets there,he has a long layover in Minneapolis. I said no it is a weather event for this weekend that will potentially displace 50 million people.

Anyhow I decided to see just how much they pay attention so I brought up Lybia, the Virgina earthquake, the debt ceiling, and a major local news event all to my surprise she knew nothing about it neither did my daughters boyfriend... The Mom spends two to three hours on the internet and every time my wife and I are over to their home the FLATSCREEN TV is going..

I guess this is what is in part wrong with they way things are. People are not paying attention and they don't seem to care. Her son is half way to the east coast by now. I told her I would not be sending my kid if I was aware of such a hazardous storm 2500 miles away regardless who they were visiting and said ITS YOUR CHOICE....hope he has an adventure and get some pictures.

1. I suspect this is true for my SO's 20-something in NYC.
Very busy in her work and world, but she has no TV and is not connected to the news. I made a point of sending her a note with links to the weatherunderground

2. The young people I know personally all say they never watch the news or
read newspapers because the news is depressing so they'd rather watch "The Bachelor" or other fun programs like that instead. They figure there's never anything going on that they need to know, anyway - nothing that affects their lives in any way.

3. "every time my wife and I are over to their home the FLATSCREEN TV is going."
I've taken a few trips over the last couple of years and have stayed with old friends. I'm amazed how the instant we all got up in the morning, the TV went on! "Video wallpaper" -- fluff programs and mindless chatter going on in the background.

It amazed me!
