The quake was felt in Cleveland.....
The Jac, the field where the Cleveland Indians play, was shaking, you could see it in the cameras, and the guy at bat, Shin Choo smacked a three run homer in the bottom of the 9th to win the game...

5. By whom? Princess Winifred upon her mattress?
A six-pointer being felt that far away? Come now. Now this is getting silly.

Is there a seismologist in the house?

7. Not a seismologist, but the difference is the plates.
Edited on Tue Aug-23-11 10:38 PM by jeff47
I grew up in CA, and like many geeky CA-ians spent a lot of time learning about seismology.

The west coast is littered with fault lines, which prevent the energy from traveling as far. In addition, the near constant 1 and 2 earthquakes on the west coast keep the plate hot. Hot plate is more flexible, which again dampens the energy.

The part of the plate under the eastern US doesn't have a lot of faults, and is cold. So it's stiff. Which means when the earthquake happened, the energy was transmitted a long distance - it rang like a bell.
