East Coast Bias.... "All of this over a 5.9 EarthQuake?"

There is an MSNBC reporter on TV right now saying that this experience is similar to 9-11!!!

I have lived in Southern California and have seen my fair share of Earthquakes.... is all of this really necessary!

When I first turned on my TV I thought it was the end of the World! Now I just realize that New York and Washington are just going through what folks in the West and around the World go through all the time without fanfare.

My goodness... ABC News broke into scheduled programming!

3. Man bites dog is news.
Earthquakes don't usually happen on the east coast.

OK, comparing it to 9-11 might be a bit much.

Read other threads here.
Quakes are not everyday occurrences in the East. You may not think a 5.8 or 5.9 is significant, but the infrastructure and construction are vastly different.

7. It is unusual for them and hence worth covering. Also building codes are different.
Think if you had a huge tornado come through your area. How would you take this:

I have lived in Southern OK and have seen my fair share of tornadoes.... is all of this really necessary!

When I first turned on my TV I thought it was the end of the World! Now I just realize that S CA is just going through what folks in the central states and around the World go through all the time without fanfare.

They happen on the East coast about as often as a Cat4 hurricane hits L.A.
If a hurricane hit you, it would be news.

10. It's an earthshaking event on the East Coast. So it's going to
be the big news for quite some time. If it had happened in California, it wouldn't be such big news.

Edited on Tue Aug-23-11 01:34 PM by rocktivity
I purchased some batteries, and was quite startled to see a reference for stocking up in case on earthquake on the package.

Because the Northeast DOESN'T have earthquakes as often as the West, or even the Southeast, they ARE news. And it's not a bad idea at all to remind everyone that they can happen just about anywhere in this great land of ours.

P.S. Everyone on the east coast would be wise to keep an eye on Hurricane Irene.

13. 5.9 is unusually large for the east coast -- could be the largest in VA's history
Not similar to 9-11, but understandably the subject of some attention.

14. You know, they have a reason to be concerned.
We on the West Coast weather those sized quakes because we have strict building codes. Back east, many buildings are old and made of brick. There is something to worry about.

15. Yes, it's necessary.
Some of us have never experienced an earthquake and it scared the shit out of us. I was awakened from a dead sleep with my house shaking and everything in the cabinets rattling.

So, yes, it was necessary.

I knew the East Coaster and the East Coast bias media would be going ape shit over this. Just tell them to calm the f-- down and maybe slap them across the face a little.

19. They just stated that because of the difference in

rock formations, earthquakes in the east are different from earthquakes in the west. The west is made of sand. It shakes like jello. The east is made of rock so it shakes more violently.

Still....

The power plants are safe. All buildings are apparently safe. I guess its just too much to ask that the largely NY based media have some perspective.

Think of it this way... there are plenty of Americans that sadly go over bridges every day that are more likely to collapse than any building in NY or DC this afternoon.

20. That's over the top, but if we ever have a little volcano here...
I don't appreciate anyone from Hawaii telling me it's no big thing.

In the grand scheme of things it's not a big deal, but it's NEWS.

28. OMG, I was right! I thought I felt a very mild tremor earlier.....
And I'm in the mountains of Western NC. It was VERY mild here....barely noticeable.....but I definitely felt it. I went online immediately to see if there'd been one in the area but didn't see anything.....guess it wasn't my fat ass that was doing all the jiggling, it really was the earth below it.

Do not mistake "your own views" to the "many". NY is not prepared for earthquakes the way California is.

30. Anything that affects NYC is automatically important news
because that's were the networks are based. The huuuuugggge snowfalls last year? My relatives in Buffalo were laughing over how a normal to them snowfall paralyzed the city, but it was national news for days. An earthquake for people not used to it is a strange experience, and people are going to talk about it for awhile and expect everyone to react like them. Here in the Bay Area after the '89 quake we had news readers from New York commenting on how people were calmly going about their normal business the day after.

OTOH, since it mainly seemed to inconvenience people at best, we left coasters are going to have fun feeling smug for a change :) Meanwhile, how's that hurricane progressing?
