LONDON RIOTS RUMOR: A Breakdown In The Drugs Trade Caused The Chaos
Let's take this with a pinch of salt, but via Izabella Kaminska of FTAlphaville comes a very interesting theory on why the UK's civil society has collapsed.

The theory -- new techniques by British police have led to a drug drought in the country. Now angry drug barons are using their power in deprived communities to hit back at the police.

If people want to do drugs, they should be able to buy them at cost of production.

3. My bullshit meter is pinned, too
Addicts are usually too sick to bother rioting when the town dries up.

This is more likely a cause of no jobs, no hope, and the few programs that occupied all the time on their hands were eliminated by the stupid Tory government as a cost saving measure.

They saved chump change. Let's see what it's cost them.

6. Business Insider? Who? What do DUers think of this source. I've read some
good articles. I don't want it to be a holding of the Murdoch Empire.

8. i dunno about dealers, but i'd think users would be too junk-sick to riot.
Edited on Tue Aug-09-11 06:05 PM by indurancevile
and btw, are there no proofreaders anymore?

"allowed them to seriously clampdown on big-time drug dealers."

"the UK found a record hall of cocaine"

and what's with the overuse of scare quotes?

'The Guardian began to wonder if a heroin shortage could "put lives at risk". Bloggers who focused on the drug underworld began to talk about a serious "dry season" in the heroin trade'

11. sounds like bullshit to me. a guy was shot. his girlfriend and her friends confronted the police
a female either did or did not get beaten by police after she either did or did not throw a rock at them.

then all hell broke loose.

in an area of the country with high unemployment - who are on the streets, not at work in a job.

one sociologist noted that the riot was a situation of "opportunity." when there are a lot of people w/o jobs who, therefore, have time and opportunity to steal to make some money after something that is considered a major injustice - well, you get the very thing you have seen.

the origin of this riot had nothing to do with any drugs, drought or otherwise.

12. They need to get their stories straight...
in this report, looters are freely sharing weed. I guess the drought isn't that severe.

destined for the UK market. That's like real money by any measure. It belonged to someone, who must be pretty pissed at the cops now. Just saying.
