shocking i know! hormone free milk at whole foods was less expensive
than what i've been paying for a local dairy at a local grocery store.

i've been paying $4.49/gal at the local grocery store. got 365 hormone free at whole foods for 3.49/gal.

too bad everything else was stupid expensive.

3. we like this quote:
teach a man to fish, he will eat for his life. teach a man to shop for fish at whole foods, he will go broke.

4. Sad but true. I like their bulk bins for certain staple items, and their produce
is reliably excellent. Can't afford ANY of their meat/fish.

7. i also picked up some
chocolate almond milk from the cooler, can't compare price because almond milk at other stores is on the shelf. cheese is comparable if you search for it. the fishery smelled totally fishy making me question the freshness...

i also picked up a few bottles of their cheapass wine. not bad for cheapass wine :-)

5. Hormone free milk @ Trader Joe's is $2.49 a gallon...
...half & half is $1.79 a pint and their Frosted Flakes cereal is $1.99 a box...it's really good! They also sell a gallon of French Vanilla ice cream that is fabulous...look for the grinder with chocolate, coffee beans, & sugar, goes great on the ice cream.

and there have been times recently when it has been under $2/gallon.

38. Here in La Crosse, WI we have Kwik Trips, regional convenience store like 7/11s.
They have their own farmers who supply them with their milk and it has always been BGH-free. I buy their milk in half gallon bags and for skim it is currently $1.14 for a half gallon. I buy my milk there (they're about a half mile from me) as well as bananas which are 38 cents a pound.

Around here the Kwik Trips wield a lot of power when it comes to milk in having the lowest price as well as BGH-free so the supermarkets have to follow their lead.

25. Maybe it varies from state to state, as milk is expensive to transport and they likely contract it..
out to suppliers. All I know is that I remember reading the disclaimer on the label that says that there is no evidence that hormone-free milk is any different than milk from hormone treated cows.

29. yes the label says so
but the difference, of course, is hormone v non-hormone milk.

i prefer to feed hormone free milk from cows that are not constantly fed antibiotics to my family.

24. Hormone free? No such thing.
It's cow's milk. It's full of cow hormones, fat and salt. It's supposed to make little bitty calves grow big and fat, only the calves it was for got killed and ground up for pet food (if they were lucky, if they weren't they went into veal crates) so you could have their baby food instead. The cow who excreted it will die soon when her milk production declines and she's ground up for hamburger.

So yay, you saved a buck on something unhealthy for you, for the environment, and for the animals who made it all possible. :patriot:

It costs a little more, but is the most humane milk I can find in the area, which makes it worth it. They're a collective of small family farms and the cows are in pastures, not feedlots.

32. can't do Whole Paycheck anymore. :(
The only factor I can afford to look at now when buying any food product is price. I need to buy the cheapest, because it's either that or do without.

Wasn't always like that. :(
