Some here say he "caved". Some say his options were extremely limited.
Some say he had to deal with the hand he was dealt. and then some say he's the Devil's concubine.

Whatever.

But what we are seeing here is that the more reasonable and conciliatory he looked, the more crazy and out of control THEY looked.

And people noticed.

10. The rigidity of the unquestioningly faithful? As to the OP, let's hope people did notice
...and they take that notice to the ballot box next time.

The next big step will be to get Democrats to act like they're an actual alternative to the crazy corporatists. ("we're the reasonable corporatists! We forfeit your futures in a happier way!")

16. There is a pretty distinct line between "criticism" and "demonizing".
A couple of people wouldn't say something nice about Obama if their lives depended on it. The best analogy would be a toxic parent who can say never bring themselves to praise their child no matter what.

35. The entire Obama-bashing meme depends on moving goalposts.
One of those goalposts being to end the "imperial presidency," which was once argued by the same people who now say he should create a new presidential power to raise the debt ceiling, rewrite federal law by executive order, and do things Congress has explicitly banned.

39. Your sarcasm doesn't change the facts.
Like that despite massive opposition--opposition which as Jimmy Carter pointed out is completely unprecedented in modern political history--Obama has kept more than 147 of his campaign promises, and failed on less than a third of that number, most of which he was blocked on by Congress.

Sure, I know Obama made good on his promise to make his bed and find a puppy for his daughters. Yippee! However, on Civil Rights and on sunshine being a disinfectant and other really important things...well, let's just say that when you move those goalposts, it's enlightening.

44. Exactly. And the people doing it have no shame whatsoever
I saw thread after thread after thread BLANKETING this place calling for his impeachment if SS or Medicare cuts were on the table. People saying this was the "last straw" and that they would never be able to support him again if SS or Medicare were touched.

Not only were these programs not touched, the Bush tax cuts (that so many screamed were the "Other Last Straw") will be allowed to expire and there were huge cuts to defense. And yet, the SAME PEOPLE are still wandering around this site calling him a sellout, saying that he "caved" and moving those goal posts so far they are now out of the damn stadium and half way down the damn street. How could the man, how could anyone NOT fail when the criteria for "success" changes so often and so arbitrarily?

They are not terms of endearment, or is it actual criticism.

It is direct and cannot be 'misconstrued'.

20. Whatever the Republicans want,
because he's not going to get any more stimulus. And maybe he never was, but it's a total certainty now.

But if symbolic victory is all we seem to be after, he could have made them look like real the bastards they are a LOT earlier in the game- before 2010 by forcing them out to the voters again on JOBS/stimulus. He decided he couldn't go back to that well a second time, but he should have, and could have used it on them big.

Now we get to wait until 2012 to throw a bunch of them them out.

That would be fine if he were to magically stand up to the next one, but I highly doubt that. When the GOP holds the FAA, a government shutdown, and unemployment benefits hostage, he'll cave then too. That's why S&P reversed its assumption on the bush tax cuts.

50. From the NYTimes:
"Those were the shoes — that was the historic role — that Americans elected Barack Obama to fill. The president is fond of referring to “the arc of history,” paraphrasing the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous statement that “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” But with his deep-seated aversion to conflict and his profound failure to understand bully dynamics — in which conciliation is always the wrong course of action, because bullies perceive it as weakness and just punch harder the next time — he has broken that arc and has likely bent it backward for at least a generation."

Why Obama's biggest fans insist that he's alternately a naive idiot or a helpless nobody is beyond me.

I think he was on track to get to exactly what he wanted in that phony crisis (which he helped sell as legitimate, along with the rest of the political establishment). The nut brigade that is the Tea Party made it impossible for the establishment GOP to accept "yes" for an answer at the last minute, that's all.
