2. No Kidding!
I'd rather pay a doctor than a damn lawyer. Unfortunately both are necessary at times.

5. Minutes it took ?
Hmm perhaps you should instead invest in reading lessons. I read the whole thread and composed this witty rejoinder in less than one minute.

12. that is ridiculously high, and I think the health-care system is probably largely to blame
Edited on Sat Aug-06-11 03:24 PM by renate
But you're not paying $200 for 10 minutes of their time, you're paying $200 for the knowledge that comes from years of (expensive) training and experience.

Or, to be fair, maybe not. If it's a follow-up visit for removing stitches or something super easy, that seems pretty high. But if it's for looking at a tissue sample and making a pathology report, or reviewing an x-ray and making an assessment, that seems like a fair price.

Edited to add that I want to express my sympathy, if you're stuck for that entire bill. Whether it's justified or not, $200 is a lot of money, and it stinks that people who've already had the bad luck to need expensive medical intervention also have to pay for the privilege of being sick or injured. I hope you're better soon.

14. Take a look at the prices on this page and see if you can criticize your doctor with a straight face
http://www.mbusa.com/mercedes/vehicles/class/class-CL

Go ahead, say it again! You have NO IDEA what his costs are like. If he doesn't charge you $200 for 10 minutes of looking at a chart pushed under his nose by a nurse and a couple questions, then he can't afford this. He'll go out of business have to sell the car and lose his membership at the golf club too.

Barbarism. That's what it is.

15. In some cases, it's much more than that
I worked as an associate attorney in a law firm in the fields of workers comp and personal injury for several years. Some of the doctors in that system milk it like you would not believe. (This was back in the late 80s, early 90s and I don't know if it's changed in my State) I can describe cases where the waiting room was filled all day with patients even at the end of the day. At the end of the day, the doctor could clear it out in a matter of 20 minutes. He would give each patient about 2 minutes of his time to very superficially check them for orthopedic injuries and then dictate a report in very rapid code speech that only his transcribers could understand. He billed the work comp system about $1,200 per patient for those reports. In personal injury cases, I was embarrassed several times by reports on behalf of clients prepared by doctors where the billing doctor was actually on vacation, such as in Hawaii during the time the patient supposedly saw them for examination. Attorneys on both sides share some blame for the way the system works, but the doctors by far are the biggest abusers of the tort system.

17. But ask a doctor how they feel about malpractice lawsuits and watch them soil themselves
My surgeon goes into overdrive about how he shouldn't fear being sued, etc., etc. Yet he stacks up surgeries like a factory and then wonder why someone who had problems with the aftermath of that zippy surgery has the nerve to sue his ass....
