Canada silences a salmon expert
The Canadian federal government in Ottawa has silenced a leading West Coast fisheries scientist who has argued that a virus is infecting and killing sockeye salmon when they enter the Fraser River, not far north of the U.S.-Canadian border.

The undammed “mighty Fraser” supports four of the world’s greatest sockeye salmon runs, push other salmon, fish that are caught by commercial, recreational and native fishers in waters of both the U.S. and Canada.

Salmon bound for the Fraser River use two routes coming from the Pacific. They migrate down Johnstone Strait in Canadian waters, as well as through the Strait of Juan de Fuca which forms the U.S.-Canada boundary.

The Privy Council Office, senior bureaucratic component of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government, has told scientist Kristi Miller not to talk to media about Miller’s “Suffering Salmon” study, according to documents obtained by Postmedia News.

1. Doesn't surprise me. Harper is a Bush clone.
Reminds of the times BushCo silenced climatologists who dared suggest climate change was real.

3. He is indeed much like Bush.
And like Bush, he has an aversion to science and facts.

5. While he was running for PM, I distinctly recall his asking and getting help from RNC operatives...

... who went up to Canada and gave him "tips" on PR, etc. It was written during that time that he wanted to be like Bush II. And look at him now. He wasn't kidding.

Too bad the Liberal Party and NDP can't find a single member to rally around who can oust him at the poll.

7. YES!
I would rather see Jack Layton as prime minister. I sure hope he can beat his cancer and get to be PM.

4. Things will begin to happen so quickly that silencing people will no longer work.
This is a finger in the dyke moment, but the dam is getting ready to burst. This kind of info will be exceedingly hard to suppress for much longer.

8. I think so too
unfortunately it postpones any attempts to address it. We see this a lot on the East Coast of course.
Chesapeake Bay = Virginia politics. Need I say more?

6. Nice to know Canada has it's share of assholes also!
It's too bad they elected the biggest one as Prime Minister.

9. BC's fish farms are as foul as any corporate farms...
...and this is why the report is suppressed. If it were a 'natural' viral disease, there would be no reason to suppress it.
