As lawmakers in Washington remained at an impasse on the debt ceiling Friday, protesters in Louisville demanded they leave programs like Medicare and Social Security alone.

Union representatives, civil-rights workers, women's groups and some faith leaders gathered with loudspeakers and signs in front of the federal courthouse downtown — and outside the local offices of Sens. Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul. snip

"Today the Republican Party and the right wing of the Republican Party in particular will not put on the table millionaires' money ... and corporations' money," said United Mine Workers of America President Cecil Roberts. "But somehow my 92-year-old mother's Social Security is on the table."
