NYC hospital worker admits stealing $1.2M in toner

A former New York City hospital worker has admitted embezzling $1.2 million from the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center by ordering printer toner, stealing it and then reselling it.

Marque Gumbs, a receiving clerk, pleaded guilty Tuesday to grand larceny.

Prosecutors say Gumbs gradually ordered unneeded printer toner on the hospital's tab. Authorities say he had delivery drivers meet him and give him the supplies on the street, then resold them and pocketed the cash.

Gumbs was fired after his November arrest. The 33-year-old expects to be sentenced Aug. 8 to 2 1/2 to 7 1/2 years in prison. He'll also have to give up proceeds from selling a BMW SUV, a diamond Rolex watch, Vuitton bags and other pricey items.

7. As Scams Go

this is kinda smart. Toner. Nothing flashy that attracts attention. Banal, even. Let the showboats steal narcs and sell them. Nobody counts the toner every shift to make sure it isn't walking. (I guess they will now.) And it's so ridiculously expensive everybody would like a little price break. I don't know if taking delivery on the street is wise, but this is NYC we are talking about, maybe they're used to that stuff.
