Oregon Reps. David Wu, Peter DeFazio vow to defend Social Security and Medicare from cuts
Edited on Wed Jul-20-11 04:19 PM by Poll_Blind
From OregonLIVE:
WASHINGTON - As the House prepares to vote today on a Republican plan to cut trillions of dollars in federal spending and cap budgets for years to come, 69 Democrats, including Reps. David Wu and Peter DeFazio, have signed a letter demanding that Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid be exempt from cuts.

--snip--

In their letter, however, the Democrats are digging in as aggressively as Republicans on the oppposing side.

“We need to get our fiscal house in order, but it is unconscionable to place the burden on the elderly, the poor, and the disabled. I refuse to allow Republicans to hold our economy hostage. We must make intelligent choices that bring down our deficit without undermining our economic recovery," Wu said in a statement.

The letter essentially restates the position offered by Pelosi and other Democratic leaders which means it's likely to find a receptive audience.

It's that important! DeFazio never lets me down, never stops fighting for me. He's a real Democrat, not some mealy-mouthed middle-management fucker who wants to give away the store.

1. Good for them! I wish some of our others had the American people at heart.

2. Well, we've got at least 69 in the House willing to sign on to DeFazio/Wu's pledge. That's a....
...GREAT start. We can and must get more elected representatives to be straight-up fearful of their constituency or those numbers won't ever get bigger.

3. DeFazio is my guy!
I know some folks in Oregon take Pete Defazio for granted; of course he's a great Congressman, etc, etc. But I moved here to Oregon from central Texas where the my Congressman was John Carter, a George Bush / Tom Delay asshole of the first order. Texas, where there was a major effort to purge all good Dems out of office that, while illegal, was very effective. They drove Martin Frost and others out of office and continue to focus on getting rid of Lloyd Doggett. So I'm very grateful to live in Oregon and for the work the Pete DeFazio does for me and the country. And I contribute to his campaigns.

Thank you Mr. DeFazio.
