The "Prohibition" trailer was on last night on PBS after Masterpiece.
This will be a must-see documentary on those times but what stood out to me. Ken Burns himself remarked how such a relatively few (Carrie Nation and her radicals) could shout loud enough to change a "way of life" for the American people and how it loudly backfired. He went on to say the same thing really, is happening today. He didn't say tea party but I sure did get his drift. We have to wait until October but the trailer went backstage to the narrators/actors voicing various people of that era.

My mother was a "flapper" back in the day and the family story was that Grandmom didn't speak to her for weeks for getting her hair cut in the "flapper style." My aunt on mom's side was secretary to Mr. Underwood of the typewriter company and she was warned against any radical changes at the hair salon. I still giggle at what must have been the issue of the day. Grandmom: "An Irish Catholic educated by the nuns shaming us in this way. Dear God have mercy on us all!"

Good times.

1. Missed the Trailer; will watch show.
As to 'origins,' just thought: This was before AA etc, and surely took energy of 'victimized' families (wives, children, etc) of alcoholics who had nowhere to go. I can imagine their frustration/angst, and thus can understand something about how/why the movement became so powerful.

6. Most definitely. My uncle was one of the first members of AA and I
remember the family going to a meeting with him. Bill was alive then and often spoke in those early days. Alcohol use did get out of control and the coming of AA was truly a blessing. Paychecks going over the bar, physical and verbal abuse in the home, etc. I look forward to this...

2. The current radical moves to ban abortion will meet the same end!
But in the mean time, many innocents will die or be maimed for life. The back alley abortions will surface again. The home remedy abortions will be utilized again: chemicals, foreign objects inserted into the vagina to cause the abortion. And what is even more potentially horrific, is that there are millions of spontaneous abortions/miscarriages each year and women will hesitate before going to get treatment after, because of fear of being "turned in to the authorities". Now, some states will have their ABORTION POLICE, actually FL is on that tract: Baggy pants police, uterus police. It is just unbelievable what harm a noisy few can accomplish in a normally civilized, tolerant society.
